After months of consultation with various sectors of society and organizations, the Advisory Council on the Impact of New Media on Society (AIMs), finally presented its report on Internet regulations this morning.

“If the Government warmly embrace what we are suggesting…it will lead to more diversity, more choices, more space for political discussion,” AIMs chairman, Mr Cheong Yip Seng, said at the press conference which was held at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel at Kim Seng Road.

The report, titled “Engaging New Media, Challenging Old Assumptions”, is a 224-page document, neatly packaged and given out to the media. It comes after consultation with groups such as the Law Society, Government Parliamentary Committees, businesses, bloggers and individuals.

Papers are slow. It’s not their fault, I know. Papers are published daily, not hourly, I get that. But explain to me how I hear about an Outram MRT shooting via Twitter, check out the CNA website and it’s not there? Yes I know CNA’s Twitter mentioned it, but sorry, dead man found at Outram MRT is not the same as man shot at Outram MRT.

mrbrown is unhappy that NETS leaked his contact information to others.

It is bad enough that the small merchants I patronise now ask me to pay cash instead of by the NETS (Network for Electronic Transfer) debit card system, ever since the merchant fees were hiked 400%, now I am receiving phone calls on my mobile phone from some insurance company connected to you...I find the AXS stations you set up fairly useful, which is why I signed up. But can you not give my contact information to such companies to bug me? In addition to wasting my time, these calls cost me money too, because my mobile is not on a free incoming calls plan.

IDA announces plans to allow use of fully numeric domain names.

Internet users can soon look up website addresses easily with just numbers, and website owners can use their favourite numbers as their website addresses. This is because pure numeric domain names will be introduced by the Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) to link websites to businesses, organisations and even personal pages.
