Resorts World Sentosa - An Inside Look [Pictures]

Sparklette said:

Are you wondering what it is like on the inside? We take you on a tour through this highly anticipated attraction. Even before the Universal Studios theme park, the country’s first ever casino, and most of the 60 restaurants are open for business, the resort has already amassed a huge crowd on its opening day!

Recommended by Anonymous Coward: "The Resorts World Sentosa integrated resort in Singapore launched its first phase to the public on January 20 with 4 new hotels and 10 eateries. Find out what to expect."

Sands Project Causes Worry

Wall Street Journal said:

SINGAPORE -- Despite assurances from the developer, Singapore is looking for ways to avoid ending up with a mammoth unfinished project on a prominent piece of land if U.S. casino operator Las Vegas Sands Corp. is unable to complete a $4.9 billion gaming venture.

"This is supposed to be the new revenue source for Singapore, and we are faced with a situation where the developer and operator will delay the completion at best or could end up unable to fulfill the contract. There are alarm bells all over the place," said a person familiar with the matter.

Recommended by at82: "Are we going to have a huge construction hole in downtown Singapore?!"

Casinos or culture? Singapore seeks tourists

CNN said:

Perhaps Singapore's biggest handicap is its lack of famous sights: it has no Angkor Wat or Taj Mahal. For many years, it prided itself on its innumerable shopping malls, and promoted its annual "Singapore Sale".

Abroad, it is often better known for its authoritarian ways -- it canes vandals, executes drug offenders, crushes political opposition, and bans the sale of chewing gum. Culturally, its development has been crippled by restrictions on freedom of expression and censorship of films and plays.

Recommended by Anonymous Coward: "Not exactly the celebratory messages we get all the time from the local media."

Link

Genting Gets the Singapore I.R. - Smart Political Move

Lawman's Thoughts said:

But the clincher - I speculate - and this this is never admitted in the official grounds of decision - is that a failure to award to Genting would have resulted in intense, totally unfriendly and uncertain competition with the region's most established (by far) resorts operator.

In preparation of the Integrated Resorts rolling our way soon, PODAH introduces the new IR workout, which will be practiced daily after school assembly (for students) and before knocking off from work (for adults). This workout, done holding a 2.5kg dumbbell, involves extending your right arm fully for 3 seconds and then bringing your elbow down to your side for 3 seconds.

3 sets of 12 reps a day will be sure to bring out the Jackpot King in you.

Why Tym is upset about the casinos

Tym said:

What roils my constitution here... is that the government took this country through a blatant and massive public relations exercise for about six months, only to announce what seems to the layperson in me to have been a foregone conclusion anyway. I've said this to many people before, and I'll put it in writing here: I don't disrespect all the decisions this government makes, but I wish they'd come right out and say what they want to say, instead of leading us on a merry dance of consultation that twirls us right back to the starting position, from which they weren't going to budge in the first place. Be bold, be blatant, be unapologetic. Have some balls about it, for goodness's sake. Don't dick around with the faux courtship --- small talk, plastic corsages --- only to turn alpha male once the dance is up.

Gilbert Koh has a story about how a bank he worked for once turned down the offer to work with a casino and why his CEO staunchly stuck to his refusal to work together with them:

A Casino in Your Future

In an imperfect world, there are no perfect solutions. This is really not the sort of thing that a politician cooks up to further his own career - in fact this is the sort of project with a high probability of failure, social scorn and going down in history as an asshat. The gahmen has thought long and hard on this.

Conclusion: I’m not 100% for this idea, and I’m not 100% against it as well. I’m just glad that I’m 100% sure that no one individual is lining his pockets with this casino idea, because if this was another country, then I would be 100% against it because I know greed and corruption would be the major motivating factors instead of local economic reasons."

On Casino Debate
