Entrenched in the local blogosphere six feet under, I vehemently disagree to the generalization of Singapore blogs as herewith subjectively criticized by the skeptics. Yet, I recognize that in this world we live in, Perception is Truth. There is truth in what the skeptics are saying but I reckon that the fundamental problem we have here is awareness. I’d bet you a round of beer than you won’t imagine the blogs listed below being from Singapore. Or at very least, most of them.

Papers are slow. It’s not their fault, I know. Papers are published daily, not hourly, I get that. But explain to me how I hear about an Outram MRT shooting via Twitter, check out the CNA website and it’s not there? Yes I know CNA’s Twitter mentioned it, but sorry, dead man found at Outram MRT is not the same as man shot at Outram MRT.

Mr Miyagi did an interesting write-up about local food blogs yesterday on his Today column. I borrow the phrase from his article, all Singaporeans are foodies, including myself though I haven’t actually done any cooking myself.

In actual fact, besides the 2-3 blogs mentioned by Mr Miyagi, there are plenty of other food blogs and I thought I’ll share them with you guys. I follow some of them pretty religiously.

Blogging is not just a fad, nor is it a vehicle of scandal as is often portrayed in the media. Some Malaysian bloggers are churning out memorable stories about their everyday lives.

In Malaysia, there are at least 10,000 bloggers, according to Aizuddin Danian, 29, co-founder of Project Petaling Street or PPS as it is fondly known, a “blogtal” (blog-portal) that allows Malaysian bloggers to post updates on their latest posts, and also serves as a directory. PPS is like Tomorrow.sg but the content there is unmoderated.

The Malaysian media has finally given their bloggers some loving. The Star has featured 4 popular Malaysian bloggers, including the infamous Minishorts and Kennysia. This article contains interviews with them. Have you checked out the blogosphere across the causeway lately?

Dead Underworld Overlord Puzzles The Msian Blogosphere

Jeff Ooi recently blogged about the shocking revelations alleged by a website that had been setup to inform the public that Malaysian underworld overlord Michael Soosai was not dead, but very much alive and up to his old tricks in India - with the help of senior Malaysian policemen.

No Underworld Dons can grow without the support of the Enforcement Agencies such as the Police Department. [...]

This website is of interest to ALL Ministers of Home Affairs in the World, National Police Chiefs in the World and Leading Publications & Movie Producers Worldwide. They have been duly informed.

But it gets stranger and stranger. Jeff Ooi now reports that there are hidden messages in the website's graphics like a Dan Brown novel.

Blogger Mackzulkifli has discovered hidden crypts on www.michaelsoosai.org that shocked the top cops. It's mind boggling. He zoomed in on the website's banner, sliced a portion of the JPG, enlarged it and turned it from vertical to horizontal. The words "MIND GAMES IV" revealed.

And the Malaysian bloggers get busy, crack the code and discover even more interesting revelations when you line up the words in row and columns. Go check it out.

What do Superblogs (like Boingboing, Huffington Post, or Tomorrow.sg) mean for the rest of us bloggers?

I see two immediate positive effects:
1) to popularize blogging to the masses
2) to highlight salient news & opinions

I also see two possibly weaker negative effects:
1) to polarize the blogosphere where the popular get more popular, the lesser known get even lesser known; works like in-groups or cliches
2) agenda setting through editorial gatekeeping
