As the year draws to a close in less than a week’s time, let us recall some of the important and sensational events, which occur in Singapore’s Blogosphere in year 2009.

Recommended by Anonymous Coward: "Useful summary of what 2009 has meant to the blogging world. Have you missed any event? Read this post."

top ten blogs you won’t imagine being from singapore

Pat Law said:

Entrenched in the local blogosphere six feet under, I vehemently disagree to the generalization of Singapore blogs as herewith subjectively criticized by the skeptics. Yet, I recognize that in this world we live in, Perception is Truth. There is truth in what the skeptics are saying but I reckon that the fundamental problem we have here is awareness. I’d bet you a round of beer than you won’t imagine the blogs listed below being from Singapore. Or at very least, most of them.

Recommended by Anonymous Coward: "High traffic blogs from Singapore that many Singaporeans don't know about. (Note: most of them are design related)"

More on Dawn Yang

This is a blog regarding the latest discovery: Dawn Yang's two confirmed CozyCot Ids. The things she said using those two Ids are startling and scary at the same time. I've changed my mind. I might update afterall. Who I am? I am someone very good at finding out secrets from others. What else are you hiding, Dawn? Unlike Dawn, I will never be found out. Enjoy. XOXO

Why Generation Y Doesn’t Read The Newspaper And Can They Do Anything?

Uniquefrequency clarifies why he doesn't read the newspapers and gives reasons why.

Papers are slow. It’s not their fault, I know. Papers are published daily, not hourly, I get that. But explain to me how I hear about an Outram MRT shooting via Twitter, check out the CNA website and it’s not there? Yes I know CNA’s Twitter mentioned it, but sorry, dead man found at Outram MRT is not the same as man shot at Outram MRT.

The Intelligent Singaporean is here to aggregate and organise the fragmented commentary in the blogosphere on social, political, economic and other issues regarding Singapore. This website aims to provide an alternative news & commentary source to other more 'edited' sources of information, as well as to encourage quality discussion and debate about Singapore. Articles are summarised with accompanying hyperlinks to the full articles and their respective sources.

Heads roll after boss is compared to Genghis Khan

WhatPC said:

The Singaporean executive fired off a curt email to his secretary, who had already left the office.

"You locked me out of my office this evening because you assume I have my office key on my person. With immediate effect, you do not leave the office until you have checked with all the managers you support," Loke wrote, according to copies of the emails seen by vnunet.com.

The secretary, Rebecca Hu, emailed a blistering reply. "I locked the door because the office has been burgled in the past. Even though I'm your subordinate, please pay attention to politeness when you speak. This is the most basic human courtesy. You have your own keys. You forgot to bring them, but you still want to say it's someone else's fault," she wrote.

Hu copied her reply, along with Loke's original email, to all of EMC's staff in China. Someone copied the email to a friend outside the company, and during the next couple of weeks the email exchange was forwarded around other companies in China, apparently reaching thousands of people, some of whom posted it on online forums.

Singapore Food blogs roundup

Click said:

Mr Miyagi did an interesting write-up about local food blogs yesterday on his Today column. I borrow the phrase from his article, all Singaporeans are foodies, including myself though I haven’t actually done any cooking myself.

In actual fact, besides the 2-3 blogs mentioned by Mr Miyagi, there are plenty of other food blogs and I thought I’ll share them with you guys. I follow some of them pretty religiously.

3. Breaking Up Poetry: Dead in my life & Loser
Bloggers ’R’ Us

Featured in The Star:

Blogging is not just a fad, nor is it a vehicle of scandal as is often portrayed in the media. Some Malaysian bloggers are churning out memorable stories about their everyday lives.

In Malaysia, there are at least 10,000 bloggers, according to Aizuddin Danian, 29, co-founder of Project Petaling Street or PPS as it is fondly known, a “blogtal” (blog-portal) that allows Malaysian bloggers to post updates on their latest posts, and also serves as a directory. PPS is like Tomorrow.sg but the content there is unmoderated.

The Malaysian media has finally given their bloggers some loving. The Star has featured 4 popular Malaysian bloggers, including the infamous Minishorts and Kennysia. This article contains interviews with them. Have you checked out the blogosphere across the causeway lately?

Link

Dead Underworld Overlord Puzzles The Msian Blogosphere

It reads: JOU SOTO SEEF WIK SOUM KE

Jeff Ooi recently blogged about the shocking revelations alleged by a website that had been setup to inform the public that Malaysian underworld overlord Michael Soosai was not dead, but very much alive and up to his old tricks in India - with the help of senior Malaysian policemen.

No Underworld Dons can grow without the support of the Enforcement Agencies such as the Police Department. [...]

This website is of interest to ALL Ministers of Home Affairs in the World, National Police Chiefs in the World and Leading Publications & Movie Producers Worldwide. They have been duly informed.

But it gets stranger and stranger. Jeff Ooi now reports that there are hidden messages in the website's graphics like a Dan Brown novel.

Blogger Mackzulkifli has discovered hidden crypts on www.michaelsoosai.org that shocked the top cops. It's mind boggling. He zoomed in on the website's banner, sliced a portion of the JPG, enlarged it and turned it from vertical to horizontal. The words "MIND GAMES IV" revealed.

And the Malaysian bloggers get busy, crack the code and discover even more interesting revelations when you line up the words in row and columns. Go check it out.

Enter the Superblogs

Kevin said

What do Superblogs (like Boingboing, Huffington Post, or Tomorrow.sg) mean for the rest of us bloggers?

I see two immediate positive effects:
1) to popularize blogging to the masses
2) to highlight salient news & opinions

I also see two possibly weaker negative effects:
1) to polarize the blogosphere where the popular get more popular, the lesser known get even lesser known; works like in-groups or cliches
2) agenda setting through editorial gatekeeping

Link

[mb: mb: Read the interesting discussion Kevin and I had in his comments section, or click on the trackback linked to it]

More CZ Reporting in the ST

lzydata reports that the ST once again mentions the PSC-scholar/racist fiasco:

"But bloodthirsty Net users are asking for his scholarship to be taken away. Others want to know if it’s safe to speak their minds on the Internet."

The author poses the question: "I wonder how popular a particular way of reading the last sentence is - 'others want to know if it’s safe to make racist remarks on the Internet.' i.e. 'Well it’s too bad he was caught, not that he actually made those remarks.'"
