For the victims of the earthquake in Sumatra and Typhoon Morakot in The Philippines, Little Red Ants Creative Studio has come together to create a pro bono video appeal to ask for aid to be given to Mercy Relief, the Singapore Red Cross and other humanitarian agencies. While they work tirelessly to help those worst hit by the disasters, we believe in doing our own small part to garner even more support for their activities.

For donations, please visit

PRC guy adopts rescued dog and posts him for SALE

avalon said:

Recently, we rescued 2 factory puppies from my neighbourhood and after taking care of them, we went about finding new loving homes for the pups...But something horrible happened. We found on 88db.com that the same boy-pup, Dane, was being posted for SALE... he even claims he paid $4k for the dog. This is NOT TRUE. He paid an adoption fee of $350...I made a mystery shopper's call this morning..It is the SAME GUY. He spoke with the same funny PRC accent and had the same voice.

Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child?

YoungFamilies said:

Parenting is a task fraught with challenges and one challenge that most parents can relate to is losing their cool. When that happens, the natural instict is to shout, scream and reach for the cane. "Parents resort to assertive methods when they've lost control of the situation," explains Elly Sim, director of Jan & Elly English Language School who holds a Bachelor of Science in Child Development and Psychology. "It's their way of struggling to gain power over the child"

World's Greatest City: 50 reasons why Singapore is No. 1

43. Most complex coffee ordering procedure ever
Everyday, in kopitiams (local coffee shops) all over Singapore, coffee stall attendants with bellows for lungs yell out drink orders in the most perplexing code this side of the Causeway. "Kopi-o peng gao jit bua" means one iced thick coffee without milk and less sugar, while "teh-si siew dai sua" means two cups of tea with condensed milk and less sugar. Don't bother, most Singaporeans just place their drink orders in plain ol' indecipherable Singlish.

Preferably non Sinagporean (PR welcome)

Seah Chiang Nee said:

AN ELECTRONICS firm that advertised last week for a “preferably non-Singaporean” engineer has added fuel to a worsening controversy in this migrant city.

It particularly stipulated that “permanent residents are welcome” to apply for this “mid-career job (salary negotiable)”.

A copy of the advertisement found its way onto the web.

Applicants should have a diploma or a relevant trade certificate, with 3-5 years’ work experience, and “preferably non-Singaporean (PR welcome),” it added. ...

The foreigners, hungrier and without family responsibility here, generally work longer hours for less pay – something that married Singaporeans with a home mortgage to pay cannot possibly match.

A small industry has risen to recruit them in large numbers – as indicated by a recruitment agency, with this advertisement: “Do you find it difficult and expensive to hire local staff? Why not consider hiring foreign talents?”

Claiming it was licensed by the Manpower Ministry, the agency said that it had recruited thousands of workers from China, India, Vietnam and Malaysia for Singapore firms in the past five years.

At a forum this month with Singapore’s most powerful man, Lee Kuan Yew, the former prime minister whose current title is minister mentor, she asked provocatively whether he would send in the army in the very unlikely event that the P.A.P. lost an election. Singapore's obsession holds lessons for us all

The Miami Herald said:

While U.S. and Latin American currencies portray images of national independence heroes, Singapore's 2-dollar bill -- the most widely circulated since there is no smaller denomination -- shows students in a classroom listening to a professor, with a university in the background. Should Traditional Media Be On New Media?

Tong Hsien Hui said:

I don’t expect these media giants in Singapore to change their philosophies anytime soon. They lack the hunger and urgency brought about by a highly competitive environment, and to a certain extent, the luddites in senior management probably wouldn’t be comfortable in such a fast paced media environment.

Chinese Language in Singapore = BORING

Oikono said:

So what is wrong with how Chinese was taught? There was too much focus on memorization, at the expense of discussions. Too much ancient (and sterilized) materials were emphasized, at the expense of contemporary issues. Why not pair banal stories of Yue Fei with materials on modern Chinese nationalism? Why not talk about Li Bai in the larger scheme of how Chinese poetry evolved? Language training in my school was divorced from the deeper discussions of Chinese culture, politics and society that could have motivated me.

Go web!

Aspiring Mangaka & Writers Club said:

There is an undeniable thrill to seeing your own work in print; your name on the spine of a book on the shelf of a bookstore or library. Which is why suckers like me spend a few k’s to get our literary vomit immortalized. Well, if immortality includes silverfish, spiderwebs and a bunch of dead trees.

A few years ago I went through the self-publishing route and quickly found out that in Singapore at least, it’s insanely hard to sell leisure fiction—that is, fiction which was written for the sake of the story and not because someone was trying to push an agenda or tell their chicken soup story. Singaporeans JUST DON’T READ! I could tell some stories about that…later.
