Siew Kum Hong not appointed as NMP for second term

Alvinology said:

My favourite NMP, Mr. Siew Kum Hong was not reappointed as a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) for the second term. :(

Quoting Alex Au from YawningBread:

“Siew is outstanding as an NMP if you go by a simple measure of how often he participates in parliamentary debates. In the 26 months that he has been in the House, he spoke or asked questions on 134 occasions. The annexure What did NMPs speak on 2006 – 2008? lists the topics that he and other NMPs spoke on or asked questions about. What will strike you is that Siew ranged over different fields, while some other NMPs restricted themselves to extremely narrow topics. From a taxpayer’s perspective, Siew is value for money.“

And instead, we got another bimbo NMP whom we sent on a US sport scholarship... come back with a fako angmo accent... "lets do the deal" Olympic non-medalist...
At least eunice olsen provide a pleasant distraction for the eye.

POWNEEEEEDDDDD.

Aiyah, don't anyhow slam leh. Jos spent half of her 28 years (since 1994) studying overseas, hence the accent mah. Also where got "we sent on scholarship" -- she did her upper sec/tertiary at RMIT Australia & got consecutive NCAA athletic scholarships to continue in America (something that almost barred her from the Olympics). Some more smart enough to get offered a Rhodes scholarship (only 32 allocated annually in the USA) to study at Oxford in 2005 but gave it up, presumably to train for the '08 Olympics.

Curious to see what she ends up speaking for: liberalism (UC-Berkeley & UT-Austin are situated in very liberal American cities) or become another Thio Li-Ann (Jos is with New Creation Church).

Heng ah, Beatrice Chia-Richmond didn't get to do a Eunice Olsen!

Simple. Singapore politics. He is a thorn in the eye of the leaders who are not interested in true debate.

As usual, Singapore government always bravely step 1 step forward and cowardly step 2 steps backward.

No conspiracy lah. Siew Kum Hong isn't any local l'infantile terrible, unless bloggers wanna compare him to Alfian Sa'at or mrbrown (which doesn't do him justice). He was valiant in Parliament, but so were the likes of Chia Shi Teck & Imran Mohamed a decade ago. "Ousted" my foot.

Relatively few NMPs get to serve 2 terms anyway - esp. post-1997 after they raised the quota (from 6 to 9) but introduced Proposal Panels (representing Business/Industry, Professions, Labour) to forward nominations (along with those from the public). I count, what, THREE re-appointees (out of 36 NMPs) for this millenium:-

TERM NMPs (Re-appointees are asteriked)
1990-1991 (2) : Maurice Choo, Leong Chee Whye
1992-1994 (5?): Chia Shi Teck, Robert Chua, Kanwaljit Soin, Tong Kok Yeo, Walter Woon (was Tang Liang Hong the rejected 6th nominatee?)
1994-1996 (6): *Kanwaljit Soin, *Walter Woon, John De Payva, Imran Mohamed, Lee Tsao Yuan, Stephen Lee
1997-1999 (9): *Lee Tsao Yuan, Claire Chiang, Chuang Shaw Peng, Gerard Ee, Shriniwas Rai, Cyrille Tan, Simon Tay, Tay Beng Chuan, Zulkifli Baharuddin
1999-2001 (9) : *Claire Chiang, *Gerard Ee, *Simon Tay, *Tay Beng Chuan, *Zulkifli Baharuddin, Goh Chong Chia, Noris Ong Chin Guan, Jennifer Lee, Thomas Thomas
2001 (9): lasted only 18 days after Parliament was dissolved for new elections.
2002-2004 (9): *Jennifer Lee, Fang Ai Lian, Gan See Khem, Olivia Lum, Braema Mathi, Chandra Mohan, Nithiah Nandan, Ng Ser Miang, Ngiam Tee Liang
2005-2007 (9): Alexander Chan, Geh Min, Lawrence Leow, Loo Choon Yong, Eunice Olsen, Ong Soh Khim, Ivan Png, Tan Sze Wee, Teo Yock Ngee
2007-09 (9): *Loo Choon Yong, *Eunice Olsen, Gautam Banerjee, Joanne Cham, Edwin Khew, Kalyani Mehta, Jessie Phua, Siew Kum Hong, Thio Li-Ann
2009-2011 (9): Calvin Cheng, Mildred Tan-Sim, Terry Lee, Viswa Sadasivan, Paulin Tay Straughan, Teo Siong Seng, Audrey Wong, Laurence Wee, Joscelin Yeo.

With the expanded NCMP scheme, there's going to be more lobang for Siew to enter Parliament again. Just do a Steve Chia & enter politics, i.e. convince voters instead of interviewing with some Select Committee.

Oops -- nominee, not nominatee.

LHL also said the NMP scheme (different from the NCMP one) "will be expanded to include Singaporeans from civil society like young activists or those in the environmental movement." If this comes in the form of 1-2 additional Proposal Panels, then it's a sharp political move to manage more-establishment campaigners -- eg. AWARE, Nature Society, migrant-worker activists -- while further neutralizing, say, fringe evangelical & GLBTQ advocates.
