Virginity a State of Mind

For those who have given unqualified support to the CSE Programme on the basis that it encourages "critical thinking", was denial or delusion what you had in mind ?

Recommended by Anonymous Coward: "The sex we had last night was not sex and I'm still a virgin ? Maybe we should print t-shirts with this graphic and distribute it to the girls at the next run of the CSE program"

If you've never had sexual intercourse before and then on one unfortunate day you are raped, do you still remain a virgin?

Yes, virginity is a state of mind. Those who think otherwise are just revolting scumbags who view women as sex objects.

That makes as much sense as claiming that not sending girls to school is "gender-based violence", that pornography is "hate speech", or that abortion is a "Holocaust".

That made no sense at all.

That made no sense either.

There are a few kinds of people who will fuss over "virginity" and attach great value to the notion:

1. Religious freaks who believe in lunatic nonsense like virgin birth.

2. Religious freaks who practice inhuman rituals like virgin sacrifice.

3. Religious freaks who think that 42 virgins await them in heaven once they blow themselves up along with a whole bunch of innocent folks.

4. Customers who pay a premium for the "first night" of underage virgin prostitutes.

I wonder which kind Melvyn Lim is.

That's profoundly insulting to all the women who value it themselves.

and then there are men who do as well. :P

You can probably count those on all the appendages I have on my body, so who cares about them? ;)

"Valuing virginity" is a euphemism that ugly, undesirable people often use to explain why they are not getting laid.

"Getting laid" is a euphemism that single mothers often use to explain why their lives are full of shit.

Ugly, undesirable people get laid often too. Say hey to your parents for me.

Lame. -.-

Virginity is just a word. Words can take on different meaning for different users. It's as simple as that.

When you're using a vocabulary only you understand, you're not communicating but engaging in self-indulgent linguistic masturbation in a vacuum.

I see that you don't get my point. Given any word, it is rare that someone has a unique understanding of it. More often than not, you'll find a particular understanding of a word is shared by a set of people instead.

What applies to one person applies to a minority as well.

Confucious says, 'Buy your naked lunches here, all packed and nice'.

I suppose it's easier to fudge the masses/younglings as opposed to teaching that virginity is a physical fact with no moral value.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 17 May, 2009 - 1:04pm

but sex is awesome!! so someone who did have sex and considers her/himself a virgin is just sad. i dont see what the big attachment to being a virgin is.

Premarital sex is as cool as premature ejaculation.

I still have no idea what "virginity is a state of mind" means.

Ah yes, the misuse of PoMo theory.

There are people fighting for gay rights all over the world. This means that we do not like the persecution of the gays, we do not like Christians or Muslims saying that homosexuality is ipso facto sinful.

But this is not a license to put your dick into any hole that you can find. That is sinful.

Virginity only becomes a state of mind when it is lost and the guilt sets in. Let’s be honest when we lose it (that is before marriage) we all felt a sense of loss and thus trying to make it a state of mind is just a way of justifying it. I am not saying that we should stigmatize teens or individuals who have lost it but rather than giving them this guilt, which may eventually lead to a “self-respect less” lifestyle they need to be able to return to a sense of self worth.

We need to teach young lings not take these acts lightly, I cannot understand how we can talk this way like it is so simple but when it comes to our own kids we are not going to allow them to run from one partner to another when they are in their teenage years. Or perhaps some of the commenters here are folks who have lost that self respect and defending your "state of mind".

In a word or 2 it's u I wanna do

Well, if you read his posts, you will find that Melvyn Lim is just a misguided religious freak. His posts shouldn't even have appeared in tomorrow.sg in the first place. The title of his blog should be changed to "Musings of an ignorant freak".

I think they are trying to get us to think about what constitutes virginity. The word I think is hypocritical or at least have its associations. Why is it that the value of the girl depends on the existence of blood stains on her wedding night?
Why do we not require men to be virgins. Is it because there is no physical proof of male virginity?
But there are girls who are naturally without hymen (or it's too thin) and there are many girls who lost it due to strenuous physical exercise like cycling. They are still virgins.
Then, there are women who have been raped. The experience has been forced upon them and it was definitely not love-making. I would classify them as virgins. The sex she would have with the man she trust and like would be her first time.
Next, it would be "Like a virgin" by Madonna.
That said, I am a bit unhappy about how "I think therefore I am" has been misused here and exasperated that I sometime succumb to it too. It is like the entire concept of Descartes "cogito ergo sum" has been given a New-Age Self-Help slant. Boo. He gave that phrase to say that we exist because we are conscious entity.
