Who is Eng Kai Er?

Alvinology said:

A simple googling of her name brings me to a page featuring a 2007 list of A*STAR National Science Scholars!

There’s a girl by the same name who was awarded with an A*STAR scholarship to study in Karolinska Institutet in Sweden:

The same Ng Kai Er?

The same Ng Kai Er?

The charged Eng Kai Er was described as a Singaporean studying in Sweden via the Straits Times.com news report…

Putting two and two together. She should be the same person hor? Anyone can verify?

It is an unfortunate fact. Good researchers are rebellious people because if they weren't that way they wouldn't come up with new stuff that challenges conventional wisdom. Unfortunately that same rebelliousness would make it more likely for them to do stupid stuff like this.

Jeez. Leave the poor girl alone already. It's not like she killed or hurt anybody.

Eh, I don't want to see the culture of 人肉搜索 growing in Singapore leh.

Man, what's wrong with all the commenters on that link? Your sensibilities are offended? Oh, too bad. Grow a pair.

That's rather uninformed of you. The faculty and research done at KI are among the best in the world, especially in both oncology and in immune disorders. If Eng wanted to research infection biology, then there's nothing "wrong" for her to go there there for her Ph.D. studies.

And whether or not her research at KI caused her to go au naturel in Holland V. remains to be seen. Why speculate when we don't know anything?

BTW, not all the biomed work done here in the US is that great - some of the more important recent findings in, for e.g., stem cell research have been done in the UK, Sweden and Japan, rather than in "top" research institutes here like Harvard. It's just that the PR machine here is pretty well-oiled. ;-)

PS: Out of curiosity, what do you mean by "elegant work" as the qualifier for good research?

Yeh was going to ask you about elegant research but somebody beat me to it.

Research is based on whether something advances our understanding of a certain topic, whether that knowledge can be harnessed for the good of mankind. In fact we are moving away from elegant research. Much of cutting edge stuff nowadays - engineering, nanotech, biotech - it's all messy, complex systems. No elegance whatsoever.

If you try to decode the message that she is sending out, one aspect of it is very clear. It says FUCK YOU. If people are offended, I understand, because I think the intention was to cause offense.

As for rebellious scientists, go and study your history and you may come up with a few. Galileo, Einstein, Darwin, Sakharov, Fang Lizhi. Even, closer to home, Lee Wei Ling. People don't really like hearing this, but a huge part of the spirit of scientific research is "fuck you, I'm right and you're all wrong" .

Just like Leong15 asked...What do you mean by 'elegant work'?? By showing people how hard you work? How good or obedient you are to your friends and family? By taking the 'supposingly time frame' for phd? And who or what determine what kind of time frame you need to achieve phd? Are you a phd holder? I wonder how long you took (if you are)....mm... I think you probably take the 'normal' time frame since you are supposingly accusing and assume of her taking the 'back door'. I wonder how you come to know about this 'back door' thing exist!.....I wonder??! Do you think the Singapore government ie. Astar, will let ANYBODY go thru back door? Or spend so much time and money on just ANYONE'?

And how do you know that the US is better than Sweden? Are you specialise in the area like she is too? Or do you just have some connections with the US? Bias or what??! Sweden is not an easy country to survive. Yes, they do speak English but not as much as Swedish. Can you speak Swedish? You don't know her and her background...WE don't know her personally. How could you make such a brainless and inhumane comment?? Sour grapes ..... perhaps!!? Do you have her gut or courage to do the same thing? We don't know why she did it. Just like I don't know why you put such an unfair remark on her? Or are you simply so 'moral' like what you are suppose to be ie. elegant?!! I'm not saying that you are what I've just mentioned...bias, sour grape, jealous etc. If you are not, I'm glad and happy for you. I just want you to know and understand how will she and her family feel when they saw comments like yours? Supposingly accusing her.

Just be kind cos you don't know what will happen to you one day. Every single person's life is different. You might be so sure that you won't do such a thing BUT it could be something WORSE!!

Very bad. A*STAR cannot condone this. Why? Next time their scientists walk around the lab naked without lab coat how? Must nip this in the bud!

Annabel Chong. Those NUS streakers. How come the average heartlander Ah Lian & Ah Beng ain't this exhibitionist?

The laxity of morals among our youth today, and the lack of proper awareness of traditional Chinese virtues leads me to believe that our proud civilisation is going downhill.

From here, I believe it is the first step on the slippery slope to having sex with your parents.

Making a political by walking nude is no statement at all. It's disrespect. Pull your foucauldian stunt somewhere else cos we really don't care for naked bodies. there's a fine fine line between guerilla activism and stupid.

I don't mind doing some elegant research on her naked body.
Perhaps she is in the midst of research on the effects of the cool breeze on her fuzzy twat.

People who thinks what she's doing is stupid, should be given a chance to travel back in time to the stone age because you're becoming too narrow minded as it might seems. We humans are becoming too complex and therefore I believe the term 'stupidity' is very subjective in this matter. Some people, artists and tribes wouldn't think it is stupid. If you still don't get my point, this is what happen when instead of adapting to the environment we live in, we (human) created an environment to adapt to us which in turn result in us having to adapt to the environment that we've created! Now it has become a crime to go back to nature? Bullshit!! If that's the case, fuck civilization.
