Tisch Asia wonders : "So what the hell are we doing here?"

Notes From Serangoon Road said:

NYU Tisch Asia lecturer, Jennifer Ruff, warns of cobras and canings in singapore and ponders the perks of "Dying of boredom...To be frank, Singapore itself is boring. There is not a lot to do except make films. Which is kind of great. In New York City, there are a million amazing distractions, but I’ve noticed that students here spend much more time in the editing lab; there just isn’t as much to tempt them... Other than Eric Khoo, whose film My Magic received a passionate standing ovation as the first Singaporean film to be in competition in Cannes this year, most cineastes probably can’t name another Singapore director..."

I'm surprised there's been no outraged howls of xenophobia yet. So, let me start the ball rolling! In all fairness, the one person I know in Tisch Asia is a complete twat. So, it's not so much that there's nothing to do in Singapore, but no one likes you people to want to do anything with you. Really.

Why would there be howls of xenophobia when it is possible most people do not take such articles at face value and jump the gun?

I've met people from Tisch and they are nice chaps. Very dedicated to their craft and perhaps a bit too immersed somewhat. But, that's what interacting with people from other cultures is about, seeing the world from their pov.

Should the typical Singaporean response be some chestthumping diatribe? Hell no. Read the article in its context and if you've lived or travelled abroad, you'll realise we are really limited in the scope and breadth of experential learning due to the geographical limitation of our little city-state.

There's some life experiences one may get here, and then there are many that you can only think about while living here.

"that's what interacting with people from other cultures is about, seeing the world from their pov"

And is that not that which is exactly what's missing from the original article? We're not exotic enough for NY-ers, and therefore we're boring? We don't drink water out of mountain streams, rushing through verdant jungle teeming with hooting monkeys, and therefore we're not worthy of interest? We don't have street urchins, big-eyed and lovable, pawing at your bags filching your things, and therefore we're only good for a base to explore the rest of Asia? Unfortunately, I agree with the first commenter, in that the author sounds as much as of a twat as the one he knows.

How true! One man's meat is another man's poison. How boring it would be if the world is nothing else but NYC.

Applause!

what i feel is the education.
Singapore always, pay attention to stupid science and maths and left out the arts.
alot of students since young already have been thought editing filming and so on.
It's only those who dare to dream and have the finances who would be in Film school.
But nonetheless it's creativity that is important

The writer's just homesick, it appears to me.

I'll be damned if these motherfuckers are the ones making films about Singapore and explaining us to the world.

I'm from Tisch Asia. I'm Singaporean. I know the author personally, and she is entitled to her opinion. If she's "dying of boredom" in Singapore, she's dying of boredom. It's not a lie, is it? It's not something she made up. It was an opinion, for Heaven's sake, not an F on your report card--stop whining.
