Association of Bloggers (Singapore)

Eastcoastlife said:

Association of Bloggers (Singapore) is a non-profit association. It is dedicated to promoting, protecting and educating its members; supporting the development of blogging as new media. I hope eventually it can help to provide legal assistance to bloggers too. It is a professional body for bloggers in Singapore.

Me think the main difference is this stupid association is led by a MAD AND DANGEROUS WOMAN. One who has once boasted on her blog of chopping up her MP, defame many civil servants, any other unwitting individual who step on her toes. Not to mention all the personal vendetta nonsense she has against so many other bloggers, aggregators, etc etc etc etc.

To be fair, I would like to add that blocking comments and access, intrusions etc. can also be the work of cyber-cops, not necessarily the aggregators.

From my experience, aggregators such as TOC, Wayangparty, Intelligent Singaporean and SingaporeSaily censor those visitors whose opinions do not gel with the propaganda or aims they are trying to achieve.

Many ways to do it - block access, block comments, censor/edit comments etc. As for Tomorrow.sg, sometimes you get viruses or intrusion attempts when you reply to certain comments. They may not originate from Tomorrow.sg but the posters' comment links.

So my point is, ABS is no different in that it also discriminates. If you become a "member" of any aggregator, you will still be censored if you fall out of line. Hence, the beauty of remaining anonymous and independent.

I don't believe any of this crap about doing it for small bloggers and giving them a collective voice, professionalism etc. They have their own agenda, the aggregators.

Actually come to think of it another way if she can carry this Association through Without help from Ah gong.
Who knows ,Maybe she can do/say something constructive too.

Why must Ping and Nuffnang dominates. ECL is entitled to her own opinion and having a variety of blogs to choose from like a buffet even if it is pro establishment is not really that bad. If she can pull in more readers this way(in a non queen bee way), Why not?
All aggregators will face some mud one way or the other/sooner or later. Ping vs Nuffnang vs google ads vs doubleclick who really cares.

The only condition where there should be voice of disagreement is when the aggregate try to impose it's wills and opinion on other blogs under it's aggregation.

In other word, individual opinions = yes, Mass propaganda = no.

Silly online politics... Before anyone got involved with those people or association, this type of comments are DEFAMATORY.

As usual... this is the Southern cyberspace... Baah~

Superfluous... who can represent bloggers 'understand' what? Society? What society is this?

I wouldn't have anything to do with ECL. I will stay as far as possible.

What a laugh..

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 22 January, 2009 - 9:06am

ECL should just drop dead and die.

I believe such an association is superfluous.

Bloggers understand that they are already part of such a society, and there is the collective consciousness already present. By virtue of blogging, they belong to a society of shared information, investigations, opinions and trackbacks.

Such an association would not be synonymous with the intended collective hivemind that is the Borg-oops-Blog.

OMG
Gatherings?Workshops?Meetups?
What an original idea and it sounds exactly like NUFFNANG??
Like hello at least nuffnang pays you for adverts and stuff.
You're paying $110 for a god knows what they are up to association?wth.

Trackback from tinkertailor: 10 reasons why I’m joining the Association of Bloggers (Singapore):

Seems like most bloggers don’t seem to be interested in joining the Association of Bloggers (Singapore). Some are even ridiculing them.

Come on, they haven’t even gotten started - we should give them a chance!...

AH TAN: More bloggers will join! That's why we join country clubs what! And the more expensive the country club is, the more we want to join right? Ah wait... I know what! It should also be by invitation only! Just to sound more exclusive!...

How can ABS help if there’s a flame war going on? They cannot and should not take sides, being a professional body. How can ABS help when there are chaos and politics in the local blogosphere? How are they going to educate bloggers to blog responsibly?...

I agree with Ganga. Someone should raise the issue to the authority (MHA which approve the association?) about the dubious and questionable motives of the president. I was wondering if she get sue, is it all the other bloggers who group with her as an "association" get sue together? Since they are guilty by association (pun intended). I was reading her blog - http://topmleehsienloong.blogspot.com/. Got a lot of smear campaign and personal vendetta published there that can be incriminatory. Maybe it is ok if she is just an unknown blogger, but now if she choose to stand out and lead, must have some accountability right?

Owing to the overwhelming opinion of bloggers everywhere that the person who has created this 'asociation' is at the very least dubious and may have questionable motives, perhaps someone more familiar with the person and/or situation may want to lodge a complaint to the authorities? It would be a shame if some unsuspecting newbies to blogging assumed that this was a bonafide authority and wasted their money.

HOW TO MAKE YOURSELF AN AUTHORITY 101

1) Find a group of people
2) Make something up or find something that hasn't been done or 'regulated'
3) Create a 'pseudo' authority that gives you the power to dictate and set rules

VOILA!

What a disgrace. Letting a mad woman run an association out to smear government and moreover is xenophobic. Utter rubbish!

Most likely another aggregator for blogs with east coast life being the queen bee.
IE her entries will get the most coverage.

Don't waste money to be lead by a crazy woman. $110 is not a small sum considering most people just blog for leisure. The association is trying to pocket the money for their own gains? Cooking lessons at Cordon Blue?

I have visited the president's (personal?) website and read the comments there. I can't help but feel that something is not right about this. It's kind of happening too fast when compared to a typical progression of a blogger-initiated endeavour. I am not sure, but I also do not see bloggers who have actually made a name for themselves being part of this.

It's too corporate and gimmicky to be a truly social enterprise and comes across as a gimmick or angle to leverage (exploit?) on the growing blogging community (and its potential).

Also, the comments are all overtly positive with the exception of CNEIL who asks some difficult questions (in a very neutral tone) which I felt were also not answered directly (or truthfully?) by the president of this association.

Perhaps I am wrong in my analysis and judgement, but the jury is still out on this one - tread carefully before pumping $110 ($50 entrance fee + $60 annual fee) in these difficult times...

Trackback from An association led by a maniac woman?:

read the crazy shit she writes on her blog. Just google her name - Jayne Tan or eastcoastlife and you see lots of her trash....

How come a bitch like ECL is the association president????? Gather ten ah mao ah kao then call themselves the association that represent Singapore blogosphere. Please lah, ECL needs to grow up. Some more she is well-known for putting nasty comments, etc on facebook lah, other people's blog, write blog scold people and government, go around bitching....

Let someone like this lead the group - sure nothing good one.

Why S$50 entrance fee? Let it be like bbs, free entrance, pay to get additional services.
