Rising costs strain Singapore's university students

UPI said:

By day, a third-year economics major who wants to be known only as Lynn attends classes at the National University of Singapore, usually clad in a simple getup of jeans and a tank top.

But at night, while most other undergraduates are asleep, Lynn trades her casual wear for a wardrobe of resplendent dresses and works as a social escort, a job scorned and labeled distasteful by most. From 8 p.m. to about 4 a.m. she entertains male clients by attending functions with them, indulging them in a drink and chat, or by providing what she called “discreet services.”

“It’s not exactly the most glamorous of jobs,” Lynn said. “I’m keeping it from my parents and most friends. But what to do? I have to eat my meals and pay my bills.”

NUS RESPONSE TO UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL ARTICLE

The report titled Rising costs strain Singapore’s university students published on 14 January 2009 does not accurately reflect the financial aid available at the National University of Singapore (NUS). NUS provides financial assistance to students in the form of financial aid packages that ensures that no deserving student is denied a tertiary education because of financial difficulties.

For Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents, these financial aid packages will help cover the entire tuition fees of the needy students. Furthermore, those on study loans and bursaries will receive more than S$5000 per year that covers other study-related and living expenses. Additional funds are also available for those who choose to accept the subsistence and Cash Assist loans offered, and participate in work-study assistance schemes.

All eligible applicants have been offered financial assistance from the University, and the financial aid given to these needy students ensures that Singapore Citizens would not require any family contribution, while Singapore Permanent Residents require only minimal family contribution for their tertiary education.

We urge students facing financial difficulties to contact the NUS Office of Financial Aid at tel: 65162870 or email financialaid@nus.edu.sg. Additional information on the various financial aid schemes available can be found at http://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/assist/.

The university gives scholarships and related freebies to foreigners who have no commitment to our country. But local needy 'deserving' students only get meagre bursaries and loans?

I am sorry, but something is wrong somewhere - misplaced priorities and gross misrepresentation of the university's [lack of] generosity towards our own people, perhaps.

That is why I am not giving a single cent back to my alma mater.

i'm a recent graduate from one of the local universities. all i can say is when i was still in school, it wasn't easy for locals to get financial aid as the criteria is so strict. no consideration was given to the sandwiched "class"... people who just fail to meet the cut off by a bit but could do with a bit more money for daily needs. instead they help fund (very) well-off students to go on overseas student exchanges.
sure, it is very easy to leave a e-mail address up there in the previous post, but when it comes down to giving you money, they don't make it that easy. in fact, when i tried to fund my studies by working part-time on campus, the school decided to implement a new rule limiting the number of hours that students can work, without giving any consideration about how this would affect student's income.
and you wonder why graduate donations are so low?

well if it's any comfort, students from many parts of the world walk the streets to pay their tuition fees too. it's not a Singapore problem.. the problem lies with the entreprise university that puts money before students. that said, an Aussie friend who earns close to $2000/week whoring herself to pay her college fees puts things into perspective. maybe a desk job isn't the most ideal.. hmm.

So is the NUS Official Spokesperson only able to give a standard answer?

I am just wondering if there is a link between money laundering and generous scholarships for foreign students. JUST WONDERING hor. That is the only logical reason for treating foreigners better than local students...until the government or university cares to clarify why, I will always be wondering...

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

the rich who did not know how to give back to the society, the able one who only think of themselves, the one who can help but did not want to help, all these people, will suffer what they had to suffer.it's only a matter of time before their time is up.no one can escape from their own doing that is their own karma.what they do will fall back on themselves.this is what the whole world is all about, recylcing on and on until you see the light and see what's going on in your life and this world that makes you wondering if you really wish to be like this, or you want to go another path.
