Muddy Singapore swallows China workers

Yawning Bread said:

This story started with an abusive employer, but what got me interested was the role played by the government departments. From this, you can see that they were not at all interested in helping workers. Mediation became story-telling in the hope of discouraging the workers from pressing their claims. No mention is made of the company being prosecuted for violating our Employment Act. The police held people for overstaying without a shred of evidence that they were overstayers. The ICA held people in an armlock, getting them to fund their own flight home, with or without being paid their wages. They all just want to get rid of the problem, with no regard for justice, law or rights.

Recommended by Anonymous Coward: "The building of Singapore's Integrated Resorts (IR) is reported to be wrecked by economic uncertainties, but little do we know about the foreign workers who are denied wages, and the governmental inaction when it comes to helping them."

hmm.. maybe this article is bit skewed..

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 6 December, 2008 - 8:38am

It is a very good and insightful blog entry/article by Yawning bread.
To Anon.
It is the "Pretend it doesn't matter/happen attitude of our social elites until it happen to them attitude" that is making common Mobile Singaporeans worried about Singaporean future as a society.
Anyways Construction industries here are already in deep trouble, it's just a matter of time before the dominoes effect occur(at least those non GLC provide a gong will help the GLCs) .

Posted by Anonymous Onlooker* on 6 December, 2008 - 4:52pm

fuck you, anon. I know people dealing with this case now, and Alex is giving nothing but a fair assessment of the situation. Take off those rose-tinted classes put on by the PAP! Good lord!

Posted by pissed* on 6 December, 2008 - 11:23am

Its rather sad to hear of such plights and indifference of govt agencies.

we must highlight these issues out and make people more aware of them.
its not fair to hire them to work for us, and kick them out when its done!

Haha, Alex has also apparently "come clean" about DBS-FOTF. It's all about perceived anti-gay values of FOTF and not some obscure African or 3rd world community they appeared to be fighting for.

They themselves are pretty coy about it in the beginning too, something they accuse DBS or FOFT of.

Talking about hypocrisy. Anon above might be right, they are not known to be objective.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 6 December, 2008 - 4:49pm

Objectivity is in the eye of the beholder.
Just like Recession will never ever reach Singapore until recently.
And DBS does not knowingly and misleadingly sell lehman minibomb to retirees, Yeah rrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 6 December, 2008 - 5:14pm

Different people object to FotF for different reasons - and some object to FotF for a variety of reasons. I happen to object to FotF both because of the bad public health policies they promote (including some which have had disastrous consequences in developing nations) and because they push homophobia. It seems to me the presence of many reasons to object to them strengthens the case against them - rather than being an instance of 'hypocrisy'!

Aiyah, dun beat round the bush lah. Hypocrisy is hypocrisy lah.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 8 December, 2008 - 1:37am

Aiyah don't go off topic lah.
Curry favour is curry favour lah .
Great article by Alex though anyway.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 8 December, 2008 - 5:15pm

So how's the curry taste?

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 8 December, 2008 - 6:37pm

I'll bet you that one or more of Lee Kuan Yew's relatives or cronies must have a stake in this Xuyi Building Engineering Co.

Posted by Singapore is a corruption-free country* on 7 December, 2008 - 4:20pm

So I hear that the company involved is a Chinese-owned company registered in Singapore. Yawing toast should hum tum the chinese company bosses instead of his own country Singapore.

Ya, it is skewed because Yawning watever's target is the government of Singapore. The rest of the details do not matter to him.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 7 December, 2008 - 5:32pm

To Anon
Just realized something you have no ideas that there are a lot of illegal workers/ over stayers in Singapore, now do you?
If you really read the article you would had realized that it is focusing on a specific organ of a complacent government that have been criminally negligent of the welfare of Singapore's workforce both local and foreign(migrant labour).(ie the Unemployment rates includes both Citizens and PR "status which are given out like toilet paper")
Come to think of it, Singapore did have a puppet Union here.Which is running a hugely successful business(ie suffocating all the old shops around it) that love to employ cheap labors too.And yes ,branching into almost every Single profitable business that should had been conducted by the citizens and private enterprises.
As for ICA? they still haven't found what they are looking for.... a very long time now.
Yet while showing such superb efficiency in rounding up unpaid workers, Personnel(aka black sheeps) have been allowing illegal Street walkers to prowl the street that lead to the spike in the health hazards.
Now isn't that more newsworthy?
Unfortunately everyone know these facts will only see the light of Main Stream Media after Approval by whoever whatever "get out of my uncaring face" Elite(quote courtesy of a certain Miss enjoying exclusive and tertiary educations paid by the people who she does not cared for).

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 7 December, 2008 - 10:26pm

Another one beating round bush.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 8 December, 2008 - 1:38am

so by your standards then, giving a detailed statement regarding the complicity would constitute "beating about the bush"? Are you a complete moron or stupid, or both?

Posted by pissed* on 8 December, 2008 - 12:19pm

Hi bear roam free :) now targeting Yawning bread huh.
How your investment doing? Your Finger got burned?

Posted by Annoy mouse* on 8 December, 2008 - 1:35pm

Yawning who? I not bear lah. I also not time for small fry lah.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 8 December, 2008 - 6:43pm

See how (un)popular he is? Plaster, feature, all over the place also no use. How many want to read his article? See for yourself.

I have ever gone to his website before, even tried to comment. But he is only interested in showing favorable comments. Mine was blocked. Little did he know that it was a test to see if he meant what he said. It proved to me he does not practise what he preaches. Why do you think he and his friends proposed community moderation?
From then on, I see links to his site, I just yawn and move on.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 8 December, 2008 - 6:54pm

looks like you need to go there more often, and you will see that the comments section has loads of people who do not agree with him, but do so in a reasonable and logical manner. Seeing how you write here, you probably failed that criteria. Either that or you just placed in some nonsensical statement that does not contribute to the discussion. So don't go around making such nonsensical statements.

Posted by pissed* on 8 December, 2008 - 8:13pm

Wrong. I followed exactly his pattern. He was waxing lyrical on why he thinks nothing of saying "Oh my God!". So, I followed lah. I just wrote "Oh my gay!".

Wahahaha! It wasn't published. What is wrong with "Oh my gay!" leh?

Obviously he was picking on those who believe in God mah. So, but when I replaced "God" with "Gay", he was offended liao.

So, where is the credibility man? He can insult people's God, then he should be able to take the cake too mah. So, he does not practise what he preaches lor.

Now we will prolly have anti-FOTF brigade spouting long-winded stories again.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 8 December, 2008 - 10:37pm

Anyway, I find that place disgusting lah. Every now an then will have reference about sex. Sex talk here, sex talk there, literally or figuratively.

I got better things to do in life than indulge in sex talk obsessively lah.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 8 December, 2008 - 10:40pm

Actually, you didn't follow "his pattern". The comments most probably call for clear, intelligent replies - you've not demonstrated an ability for intelligent thus far, though it is clear that whatever comments you had, they were wasted in your attempt to be.. uh, I'm lost for words.

So to be fair, it is possible you followed the grammar and structural requirements for comments on Yawning Bread, but you most probably failed to demonstrate a certain amount of insight or honesty needed to get those comments published. It's a bit like paying lip service to human rights and then using the judiciary as your own political hatchet, eh?

Posted by Anonymous Chimp* on 9 December, 2008 - 12:14pm

Ya lah, you can say I am unintelligent watever. Up to you. My self-esteem does not depend on your opinion (at best) or inability to understand (at worst) lah.

But if he says "O my God!' is nothing wrong and he has the right to say it, then I can also say "O my gay!" is also nothing wrong mah. If he has the right, I also has the right mah? If he has the right but I don't have, then it is another case of hypocrisy lor.

Simple as that. What grammar and structural requirements lah. You are making assumptions about my comments, I tell you "Oh my gay!" was the only comment. So, he is still practising double standards if his "Oh my God!" passed stringent criteria and not mine. Same same mah. Hahaha! Some chimp must have been too quick to curry curry.

Anyway, now it seems he is not interested in rallying locals because locals not as stupid as he thought, even after being a celebrity in ST, not much result. Now he turns his attention to lending a voice to PRCs. Got second part some more. Hopefully, the PRCs will not disapppoint him if they are needed to return the favor.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 9 December, 2008 - 11:04pm

My computer was hit with the blue screen after replying to the chimp's comment. But I am back, in the pink of health, and will be back to exercise my right to free speech (until Tomorrow.sg makes it free only for people who donate $$$).

So if I donate $$$, can I feature my own articles too?

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 9 December, 2008 - 11:45pm

It's clear from Yawning Bread's post that the ICA and Ministry of Manpower are complicit in this matter, aiding and abetting Xuyi Building Engineering Co. This is a little strange. While it is true that ICA and MoM are pro-business, like everything tied to the PAP government, they don't normally bend the rules so much. Not unless some high-level big wig in the PAP extended family cartel is involved in this company. If somebody can dig out the list of Singaporeans with a major stake in Xuyi, we will be able to verify this.

Posted by Anonymous Coward Too* on 8 December, 2008 - 3:39am

Tsk tsk tsk. Resort to virus/phishing whatever some more. There is no hope if these people are to 'lead' Singapore.
