Voting is our right, not a privilege.

Siew Kum Hong said:

Another reason that has been cited is that a by-election would distract Singaporeans from the pressing issues posed by a slowing economy and rising inflation. This was also the reason cited when Dr. Tay Eng Soon passed away in 1993.

Sir, surely this argument cannot stand. It implies that voting and elections are luxuries, that they are really just so much fun and games to be left for good times, and inappropriate and unnecessary in bad times. It suggests that the right of voters to be represented by the team they have elected, is in reality a privilege and not an entitlement. It means that the principle of representative democracy is not fundamental to our society, and can be waived by the Government of the day when deemed inexpedient.

I think that cannot be right.

Trackback from Sylvia Lim WP - Speech On Motion on By-Elections:

the motion shows that the GRC system is a system which does not promote representative democracy. The attempts in the motion to cure the problems with GRCs do not address the fundamental problem of the GRC: that it dilutes the voter’s voice....

cheh is the nmp who raised that just trying to scrape e barrel for justifying a place in parliament?honestly sheesh. there are larger and more pressing issues at hand.
take a page out of lily neo's devoted duty to her wards.

You mean the right to vote is NOT A PRESSING ISSUE? Wow.

Pressing issues that we face are exacerbated by administrative actions of the government. If you think government action does nothing to alleviate these pressing issues, then perhaps you should start your own island where survival is paramount with no peer. You are part of a civil society, whether you are civil. It's unfortunate that voting rights should be an issue, no?

... start your own island where survival is paramount with no peer ...

Errr.... Isn't that what happened?

A move away from Malaya and become this island tyranny, ...I mean pseudo-democracy, ....I mean dictatorship, ...I mean Singapore...

Trackback from Huang Shoou Chyuan - No by-election no matter what! Politics Singapore Style! :

Now one of MSM’s papers, The New Paper has also said it too. That a significant number of people in Bukit Batok think that it is in their best interest to have a by-election....

hey duh*, if there's one MP less, how can they deal with the pressing issues? Unless, that MP wasn't needed in the first place...
