Police arrest former Singaporean for insulting public servant

CNA reports that Gopalan Nair, who blogs at Singapore Dissident, has been arrested.

Police have arrested a former Singaporean for the offence of "threatening, abusing or insulting a public servant".

In response to media queries, police confirmed that Gopalan Pallichadath Nair, who is now a US citizen, was arrested at Broadway Hotel along Serangoon Road on Saturday.

A warrant of arrest without bail was granted by the courts for the arrest.

Nair is alleged to have sent an email to the Attorney-General and the Solicitor-General which contained statements amounting to the offence of insulting a public servant.

The statements were directed against Justice Belinda Ang, a Supreme Court judge. The statements were also posted on Nair's blog.

Nair is presently in police custody. He will be charged in court on Monday.

Trackback from Singapore Dissident: Lee Kuan Yew: If bloggers who defame me identify themselves, I will sue them!:

Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, look here. I am now within your jurisdiction and that of your corrupt police and your corrupt judiciary who will do anything you want of them, however criminal and illegal.

What are you going to do about it?...

He got his answer.

Trackback from Josh Reviews Everything:

Attention Singaporean bloggers:

Please note that "insulting a public servant" is a crime, and will lead to arrest without bail....

This is what we call the "Kiasu" Syndrome 3 trackback leh :)

Heh - yeah, my bad. I've asked the mods to fix it.

I don't know if the email is still down.

Looks like it's fixed, anyhow - thanks for that.

Choose your battle, rather than being strong headed. This is another classic example of our oppositions. I don't think I feel safe with them heading the govt.

Not that I agree with every actions by the govt, but just gotta choose the one of the lesser evil.

Yeah. The unfortunate thing is that the activists are just perpetuating hegemony by discrediting alternatives.

With Great Mouth, comes Great... erm... erm...

Trackback from Blogger challenges MM Lee:

In what could be the most daring or foolish act ever in the history of the blogosphere, a blogger has challenged MM Lee to sue him....

I am the author of Escape from Paradise, a book which has been baned in Singapore. My website is highly critical of the Singapore Govt. - with some revealing documents, to boot.

My wife, a Singaporean, has always cautioned me not to visit Singapore. NOW I FINALLY UNDERSTAND.

Like most wives, she is usually correct. No more hawker center food for me!

Cool I love that book though hard to get in library But manage to get one from Amazon. The tidbits inside are quite juicy and clarify a lot of things thats quite baffling.
And I never realize before that the women charter start with brothel rules.....

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 2 June, 2008 - 2:04pm

Actually you can get it in the NUS library. They even have copies for lending out (not just read-in-library)

Thanks for the information that Escape from Paradise is available from the NUS library. The 25 copies in the National Library, were always checked out, until the National Library put the book on restricted access.

Escape from Paradise has just been optioned by a Hollywood movie company. Let's see what
Singapore does about the film.

Again, thanks for the info.

Will the Hollywood blockbuster have nudity, explosions and Nicholas Cage? That would be soooo cool!

I have not read the book, but the website is really hilariously funny and wickedly juicy. I guess the book is available in certain places because the principal character is no longer in office.

You don't have to live with injustice. Just don't go barreling down like a frenzied madman.

Trackback from When in Rome.. do what the romans do!:

Even though, being not a Singaporean citizen, doesn't stop all responsibilities in whatever you blog especially when you are on our sunny island!...

to openly ask for trouble in his blog is one thing, however he was arrested because he "sent an email to the Attorney-General and the Solicitor-General which contained statements amounting to the offence of insulting a public servant".
the question is really whether he did that or not, and that legally has nothing to do with his blog. but we all know how the wind blows on this part of the world.
if you want to be screwed, we have a whole menu of ways to screw you.
seek and ye shalt find.
amen.

Are you claiming that the police are lying about their receiving an email from him?

did the chicken or the egg come first?
no one's claiming anything they don't know.

Posted by Charlie* on 5 June, 2008 - 2:44pm

Did you just make an allegation regarding the police?

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 5 June, 2008 - 2:59pm

He just got his wishes! By arresting him, he had just increased his blog readership numbers to heavenly figures!! This is the new type of viral marketing I tell you! I will add Google Adsense to the blog IF I am him...

Err if everyone here starts to insult..xxx will the prison be big enough...no wonder we fight so hard for Pedra branca...now I know why.

More rants at my blog read it before it's shut down!

Anti-government blogs are commonplace enough. This is just another. So what?

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 4 June, 2008 - 8:12am

Theoretically, my blog is not against the gov....lah..

The hotel at Serangoon is missing one resident. Why don't you check in?

Trackback from Media Slog:

I wonder who this guy is working for and what organization is backing him up. This is clearly an orchestrated act of civil disobedience. He's not an idiot; his blogger profile says that he has traveled the world and practices law in California. ...

Gopalan Nair -- Get lost, you defector. Don't interfere in local politics, because you're a foreigner now.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 6 June, 2008 - 12:48pm

I wonder if he will jump bail.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 6 June, 2008 - 12:56pm

did anyone notice how the govt-controlled media portray him as an ex-lawyer, when in fact he still is one? There was even a long-distance videoshot of him walking out of court looking unkempt; he probably didn't realise he was being captured on video. These are just some of the dirty ways employed to brainwash less-educated S'poreans, to show that he is just a piece of dirt. To Mr Nair I say: Hold your head up high. Those who are after the truth like you are unfazed by the claims made by the hairy emperor and/or his idiotic zombies of this police state. God-willing, your actions will make more people see the light. To the hairy emperor, judge dreadinda & co, I say: G^@B#%G$%JNKO(*&^$UGCF$%^$#@I BUIR&@*(&^@@BD$^$Y*&^%))_(H&^%F&C%@#!_)(_)+_ V*&
