The Singapore Eye - the great wheel of boredom?

Corporations are rushing to offer journalists complimentary tickets to take The Singapore Eye for a spin, but it seems like those who have taken it have complained that it was a boring thirty minutes ride.

Be careful hor... Wait that Singapore Eye calls you and threaten you legal action if you no remove article in one night!

Just friendly reminder. Nowadays, Singapore got such things happening one, albeit it is of cos absurd.

Scope.

It is a matter of national pride. This is our answer to The Two Towers (of Petronas) in Malaysia — our very own (Singapore) Eye of Sauron.

Its a stupid idea to have it here actually
There are so many tall buildings here and most of us live in flats - a view from high up is not really unique. Even for a tourist here, they can just look out from the windows of their high-floor hotel for a bit of the high-up experience and its free!
The situation is different in London.

Its just like the al-fresco dining here - monkey see, monkey do

Heard that that is a fengshui fixture to counteract against the possible ills of the upcoming casinoooooo... i mean, Integrated Resorts coming up across the river bank.

Typical Scholar's work..

Going round and round without getting anywhere...

Limpeh just made an ironic comment, OK? Instead of saying "this Singapore eye is boring" I make another comment that provokes dipshits like you to say "wow this shit is boring". It's more elegant that way.

It's like everything else in this boring as batsh*t hellhole.. no originality.. just copy someone elses idea and then gloat (incorrectly) about how you are the best.. I have lived in Singabore for 4 months and out of the 40+ countries I have travelled/visited and lived in, this is by far the most boring, restrictive and pathetic hellhole I have had the misfortune to have set foot in. Rules for this, rules for that.. no freedom to think or act, rude as hell people the Chinese here are like ants with bad skin, pushing, shoving KIASU queues for anything that is free, spitting everywhere, terrible Singlish, self opinionated a**holes everywhere...The Malays and Indians are lovely but the Chinese are horrendous, they live like pigs in HDB's with litter in bags everywhere, they have no manners and think they are above everyone else. There is litter everywhere, the weather may be warmish but is generally shyte and all anyone does is wander about eating crap food that makes their bad skin even worse.. I cannot wait to return to Japan with my JAPANESE girlfriend or for us to move to my home back in Europe... where the class, culture and fashion these idots crave is REALLY from !!!

I know this is an old thread, but I felt compelled to write in response to the comments of Anonymous Coward. Wow - our impressions of Singapore could not be more different. I have also lived in a number of different countries and travelled the world extensively and the conclusion that I have come to is that Singapore is by far the best country I have ever found to live in. I have lived here for almost two years and I love absolutely everything about it. Oh except the weather which is too humid, but you can hardly blame Singaporeans for that. In fact, I'm kind of grateful for the weather because I figure that if it was more pleasant, the population would soar because people would never leave and would flock from all over to live here : )

Having lived in different countries and noticing people's different opinions of living there, I've come to the conclusion that one's opinion is very much dependent on your personality. For example, if you love chaos and do not value people being pleasant and considerate to each other, you just may love Athens... What I've discovered for myself is that because I value people being kind and friendly, I love organisation and incredible government, I love living in a city where everything works, I love greenery and nature, I love living somewhere that is unbelievably safe, I love living somewhere where the people are polite and incredibly pleasant to deal with and where there are no yobbos/slovenly drunken louts making life unpleasant for everyone, I love living in Singapore. In fact, I think that Singapore may have ruined me forever - I just cannot imagine enjoying living anywhere else after living here, I can't think of another place that measures up.

I'm also always suprised at people complaining about the rules/lack of freedom in Singapore. I could not disagree more. Who wants to live in a country where every time you step out onto the pavement on a hot day your shoe becomes covered in melted chewing gum, or having to talk to people who chew gum like cows with their mouths open, or... I don't even know what rules Anonymous Coward is complaining about. I have not come across one rule since living in Singapore that did not make sense, that was not in the best interests of any sane, thoughtful person living here. I would much prefer to live in a place where there are rules rather than somewhere where people selfishly went around doing whatever they wanted, endangering and disrespecting others in the process. Rules really are just about having people do what's in everyone's best interest and I am delighted to live somewhere where they exist and are adhered to/enforced. Again, my opinion is likely because I believe in being respectful and thoughtful of how my actions affect others. If someone is more concerned about their own selfish interests, then I can understand them balking against rules. Which is something that you would hope that people would grow out of once they are beyond adolescence...

I can also say that without a doubt my opinion of what an incredible place is is shared with an enormous number of expats that I meet here. At every dinner party I've attended since I've been here where there have been people from different countries in attendance, the conversation inevitably comes around to us all raving about what a wonderful place it is to live. Very often people comment that they were posted here for 2 or 3 years and then made the decision to stay permanently because they love it so much and cannot think of another place that has all that Singapore has to offer.

I'm sorry that Anonymous Coward has had such a different experience of Singapore. I would just like to say that that is definitely not the experience and opinion of many many others who adore living here.

And I am compelled to thank you for your kind thoughts. We need and welcome more gracious guests like you here.

Not at all! I feel so happy and grateful to be living here that it feels like the least I can do to make a little public declaration once in a while to express a few things that I like so much about living here. I also think that it can be part of human nature to focus on things that we don't like rather than noticing how many things we have to be grateful for. I think that we have so much in Singapore to be grateful for, especially when we compare ourselves to other countries, I think many people here lose sight of that which is a pity... We are enormously lucky living here. We have many reasons to give thanks for all that we have : )

Are you sure you're not Singaporean yourself? If you are, shame on you that you're hiding under a mask, and if you're not, let Singapore deal with our own problems!

I chanced upon this post while hunting for information about the Singapore Flyer (I thought it was called the Singapore Eye). Anonymous Coward - I seem to be living in a parallel universe. I lived in Singapore for a year in 2005 and it was a lovely place, although hot like an oven. Surely the people couldn't have morphed in such a short time. I am curious what invited your wrath, particularly against the Chinese Singaporeans. I have lived in several Asian cities, e.g. Shanghai, Tokyo, Taipei, etc. I got to say, I'm not a fan of the crowds in Shanghai... If you think Singaporeans push and shove, wait till you get to Shanghai and try to pay for your purchase at the cashier. People cut in front of you ALL THE TIME and just shove their purchase onto the counter to displace yours and the cashiers don't bat an eye. Unbelievable. But I had a wonderful time there nonetheless. My local co-workers were the friendliest bunch. Japan is great - the people are friendly and the most polite I have encountered. I guess you must share similar positive sentiments since you are obviously proud of your JAPANESE girlfriend. I do hope you have gotten out of Singapore since you find it so miserable. It is a free world after all.

Sheesh! What a grouch! I can only imagine what a barrel of laughs he must to hang around with. Oh, his poor JAPANESE girlfriend! Although I guess it would be far more likely that she is now his JAPANESE ex-girlfriend. I can hardly imagine anyone wanting to hang around that for long (if at all really)...

And, is it just me, or does it seem like a marker of questionable psychological health that someone would post such bristly, mean-spirited comments on Christmas Eve? I don't know, it seems wrong at any time, but just particularly so (regardless of your faith)...

The Singapore Flyer started operation in February 2008 with lot of fanfare and million dollars publicity. The icon at the Marina Bay has always being associated with govt body, the latest being a former minister is now a Executive committe members.

But since operation, this icon has been in many business trouble, namely

1) sales of tickets is far short of forecast
2) many complaints from public on the ticket prices and the experience
3) problem and writ by tenants of the Flyer, , latest a collective class actions by 14 out of the 30 tenants at the Flyer against the landlord
4) Flyer suddenly stopped on 23rd December 2008 trapped some 100++ passengers in the capsules for some 12 hours. The management were at a lost on what to do and some passengers were in tear whilst being lowered via rope from the stalled capsule some 5 storage high.
5) writ of summon from vendor for $10m for a cancellation of contract
6) Holding company of Singapore Flyer, GWC is facing suit from its landlord for non payment of rental at its Apex Tower office. All staff at this location were served with termination letters. Similarly its head office at Centinnel tower were also served with termination letter
7) Flight of key staff, it CEO, Director of Operation, General Manager had all left the organisation

Daily ticket sales for weekday now average at no more that 2,000 tickets and this included many complimentary tickets count. The company is highly geared and is swimming in a pool of debts which is fast raising and drowning the Flyer.

These are my views when I have been living in Singapore for 30 yrs. I have a Singaporean chinese wife. To be frank, I dont like Singapore too but it provided me a secure income and I do not want to venture out to another country again due to my age.
Singapore is clean at 95% of the places. 5% are a bit dirty because foreign workers likes to spit and dump as what they did in their country. Some 0.1% local SIngaporeans are dirty too. Not all chinese are bad. If you want to say bad, all races are the same in Singapore. Some Malays/Indians/Chinese are rude but not all. Singapore is a very stressful country as it need to compete with all the surrounded bigger countries which are cheaper in most factors. If compared cleanliness, Singapore is comparable near to West Europe. But if compared to stress level, it is too stressful to work here which such a low salary and medium cost of living. The high cost here is property and car which drives other cost factors up. Racism also a bit of problem here as you know every multi-race countries faces that too and every country will cover-up its racism problem. I noticed that Singapore is surrounded by Malay Muslim countries so they recruit more Chinese into the army to prevent bad things happens. So most of the Malays are in the civil defense and police force. So be careful if you are non Malay caught by a Malay officer for dumping. There will be no mercy and they will be too happy to kick you with the heaviest summon. I have seen many offenders were Malay and will be let go if the officers are Malay. While the chinese officers are selfish. They will go by the book and summon you with no mercy. Only good thing is they will not kick you with the heaviest summon. They will go by the book and I wonder if the book ask them to jump into the drain, will they do so? Indians officer will do the same but do not quarrel with them or they will kick the shit off you as Indians here always will proud of themselves when they are richer/higher. Lower grade Indians are always good but when they got rich, they are bad.
I have not been up on the Singapore Flyer and will not do so as there is nothing special. Some people have nothing to do and a lot of money to spend so it depends on individual.
My works let me travel around the world frequently. Japan is nice but wait until you get up the train during peak hours. Everyone will push you like hell and never cares if you are a lady carrying bags. They will push until you drop to enable them to get into the train. It seems you knows nothing about Japan.
Europe is so big! Are you mentioning Russia? Europe is so big so it depends which part of the country. As I know lots of Europeans have black moles all around their skin so if you are in that category, you are pot the kettle black. Most of the Japanese are not beautiful as what you see in the tv. Older gens Japanese girls are very loyal but lots of newer gens are bitches. They try not to work so money comes from dirty jobs. I hope your wife is the clean type.
To my view of point, Anonymous Coward is a liar. Perhaps he is a Malay and racist.
I admit that there is no freedom if you ban people from chewing gum and banning cigarettes entry from airport. It is also too strict for nothing. I just wonder if it is so strict, why someone can escape from special jail so easily? All these are because overproud.
I misses the old Singapore when everything is so nice, chearful, freedom, manners.
