The Consequence of a 'regulated' press.

Jeremy Toh said:

What it means is that of 236,600 jobs created last year, 92,100 went to locals. This means that a staggering 144,500 jobs went to foreigners last year. This works out to be 61%. Now, I may be a mass communication student who is stereotypically bad at doing math, but 61% is definitely not A THIRD as reported by The Straits Times. Now do you get the picture?

But hours after it was published, a new revised version mysteriously appeared on the same page: ...

1/3 locals, 1/3 foreigners and remaining 1/3 Cylons.

Cylons cannot be accounted for as the Govt will deny their existence.

If you think that's bad, you'll be devastated to find out the truth.

Firstly, these "locals" include a substantial number of permanent residents. Most of these jobs went to them. Why? Because the PRs in Singapore don't come here to live, they come here to make a living. If they can't find a job, they go elsewhere. The ones who are here are the ones who have a job. The truth is that many, many more PRs are gainfully employed than citizens. That is why the government is so afraid of distinguishing between PRs and citizens when it comes to employment figures.

Secondly, the jobs that are created for Singaporeans are the sort of low-wage, dead-end jobs. You basically live from hand to mouth, from paycheck to paycheck. The job offers absolutely no prospects for the future --- you'll be stuck in the same position with the same miserable pay and the same long hours for the rest of your life (well, to be fair, only until you get replaced by somebody younger or decide to jump in front of an MRT).

But are the differences in the headlines because the local presses are being, uhm, pressed (can't resist, you know by 'pressed', I meant 'regulated') by government?...
