Too many foreign workers in Singapore!

mr biao said:

On most evenings, there’ll be groups of foreign workers of various nationalities having picnics on grass patches EVERYWHERE. They sit around having food and drinks, and almost always never clear up after they finish, leaving debris all over the place. Sometimes some of them get drunk and get rowdy or even fight with one another. I understand these chaps don’t have many options for entertainment, I try to emphatise with that, but it gets overboard when they start to make trouble and mess up the place.

Also on weekend evenings, some of the buses that go past my place are filled with foreign construction workers, presumably going back to their quarters after a day out. It gets quite scary when I board the bus and find dozens of pairs of eyes going all over me like I’m some alien… when this is my country! Sorry, maybe I’m too sensitive, but I personally feel quite uncomfortable about it, and I’m a guy. I wonder how girls feel about such a situation.

It is really depressing to see so much infighting with regards to racism. I'm 21 and I have been residing in Singapore for 21 years. I don't see a problem why an inflood of foreign workers will affect us in anyway.

The problem with us is that we often create a perception about a group of people based on a few black sheeps. I don't see all foreigners as "bad". I have seen really polite and nice foreigners around. The same goes for Singaporeans.

As for the topic on "job-snatching", I don't think that it is a problem. If we really got the potential and set-not-so-high-expectations of our employers, I don't see a problem getting a decent job and salary to live by.

We take control of our life, don't we?

As an expatriate i will tell you that you're all racist if you dont think that these people dont contribute to society, what would singapore be if not for foreign workers not many of you recognise the contributions foreign workers give to society whether they are skilled or not. dont be ignorant of these workers. and i've never seen them get drunk or do anything that would make me doubt how "worthy" they are to be here.

yup, I agree, the aunties can be downright rude, haha! I experienced eating at a kopitiam and was enjoying my meal and besides, I have nowhere to go, tired but didn't want to go home yet so I took my time eating. The kopitiam wasn't full cause it's past lunch time and this auntie was staring at me. I mean, there are no people around me, no need for her to rush but kept on looking at me. well, auntie should just retire if she doesn't know how to give customer service even if she only cleans tables.

listen to this this song from a.c.a.b racial hatred

racial hatred everywhere
lives are threatened
and live in fear
some ppl just dont care
see destruction and despair

dont you know
ure just the same
u are living the same game
theres nothing judge
by the colour
and nothing to win
by hating each other!!

so yellow brown
black and white

stop racial hatred
and start to unite

unite!!!

its true that singaporeans are racist. I can be at times. The point is, this is a multi-national country. People have different feelings, attitudes and degree of tolerence, it is bound breed racism. Singaporeans can be racist is because of the previous generations that had made foreigners look bad. Come on, if you are born into a poor family and forced to work like one of those foreign workers doing civil service, you would not even insult them but treat them like buddies. They are racist because when they were growing up, their parents go "Study hard, or you will become like one of them" *points to a cleaner who will look like a foreign worker* Their parents gave them a wrong message, not 'Study Hard' but 'Don't be like them' otherwise can be intepretted as 'They are dirty things'

I am not blaming anyone here, just my point of view. Hiring foreign workers have their pros and cons. They do jobs that no singaporean would do unless forced to, they do cheap labour and employers save more money by hiring them instead of a student who holds a degree and demands higher pay. However, by working here, they're hinting (unknowingly) other foreigners that Singapore is a good place to earn money, since it's multi-national, they can blend in and work for higher pay than in their motherland, this of course leads to overcrowding.

Look at this way, take for example a worker from Bangaldesh (sry if i misspelled) came to Singapore and work as a cleaner. Why would he do that? Three things : 1. Money 2. He have not much qualifications to get a better job 3. It's the only job no one will fight with him for. Do you really think he wants to do that job? He have no choice.

i don't know how to write in this page ...

I also heard that ,most of the people who live in Singapore ,especially Chinese , Malaysian and Myanmar .. i think they are not a PR they live and work in there because of their lack of jobs in their mother land .. to work in Singapore they could get a more salary and more accommodation than in their their place ,so, the came and fin a job in there . That is why so many people are not a singaporian..

it is uncomfortable to go into a bus full of men and see them staring.

but this doesn't just apply to foreign men, it applies just as much to singaporeans too. it's no different, really, just the colour of our skin, our accents, our beliefs... but at the end of the day we're all just people living on this small island, period.

Fuck those ppl think foreign workers shouldn's appear in Singapore!!! without them , u and ur stupid family will have no place to stay! IDIOTS! MOTHERFUCKER! U think u very good meh!!! u only Singaporean!!! fucker! u mother nv teach u how to appreciate meh! BLEEDY IDIOT!

I am a chinese singaporean residing in norway, it has been three years since I come back home for a visit, I certainly can see and feel the changes in Singapore from three years back. Almost every corner I turned, I can hear a china accent, I do get this feeling we are overflooded by china people. They are taking over many jobs especially the service sector. I do not think I am biased towards them, it is just very irritating when they do not speak a word of english. Most chinese singaporeans are not so well versed in mandarin since we use the english language in both work and school. I can speak mandarin, but I cannot read or write very well.*I do wish I can do better in mandarin, but english is still my fave language to communicate* I just feel there should be a rule where those foreigners working in singapore especially in the service sector, should know some english, at least primary school standard??! Or the sg govt. should set a rule that they must take a english beginner's course to start off with.
I was just wondering tourists who visited singapore will get a wrong idea that we singaporeans cannot speak english since I don't think foreign tourists especially Ang Mos can differ a local chinese to a china chinese. My point is to serve us better, and to serve the tourists, they should at least know some english.
I think there will always be issues when too many foreign workers are in a country, the locals will always feel the negative sides more than actually seeing the positive ones. We have to be more understanding, that is very true, but I also say that the foreign workers should also learnt to behave properly and try to blend in with us.
Yesterday at AMK hub, there was a scene where three young china people, they were very loud, two females and one male. I think the male was two timing them, one of the girls was very upset and shouted very loud. And of course, I read and heard about the murder cases involving china people.
Singapore is not as clean as it used to be as well, we should really recycle more, I mean, the govt. should promote recycling to all singaporeans. In Norway, they are big on recycling. There should be big tank container for the citizens to recycle themselves, to throw glass; tin; paper; plastic.
I guess living aboard, showed me alot of new things in life, I still love singapore but it is slowing changing ...
I am still getting used to hearing china accents at every corner I turned ... lol ... trying to gasp .. err ... am I in China or Singapore ... HAHAHA ...

well certainly european tourist wont get the wrong idea that singaporeans cant speak english, its not even wrong, it is in fact a fact! the language you guys speak is Singlish, and im not sure if you guys have a name for that weird mandarin you speak as well. mind you, most of those "ang mos" repect the chinese much more than they do to you singaporeans, and its not even about the race, its for the culture

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 15 June, 2009 - 10:39am

If you are irritated by the Chinese or foreign nationals who speak little to no English- do you think Norwegians are irritated by your Singaporean accent as well which is very difficult to understand?

SORRY TO SAY THE BELOW, BUT YOU HAVE TO ACCEPT THE TRUTH YOU RACIST MORONS,
MOST SINGAPOREANS ARE DAMN RACIST,AND ITS REALLY USELSS TO SPEAK ABOUT IT COS DEY ARE NOT GONNA CHANGE, IAM TELLING THIS AS A PERSON WHO EXPERINCED SINGAPOREAN RACISM FOR 4 YEARS,
A SMALL ADVISE FOR THOSE RACISTS DER, IF YOU DONT LIKE JUST USE YOUR POWERS TO STOP DEM COMING IN TO YOUR COUNTRY, AND PLS DONT BRING DEM IN TO YOUR COUNTRY AND MAKE DEM SUFFER BY YOUR RACIST THOUGHTS, ACTIVITIES AND WORDS.
YOU PPL HAVE TO CHANGE THE ATTITUE OF SEEING AND RESPECTING PPL BASED ON DER WORK, EVRY ONE WORKS FOR MONEY. SINGAPOREANS USUALLY HATE PPL WHO ARE POOR, DOING LOW LEVEL JOBS (JOBS DAT SINGAPOREANS DONT WANAN DO), AND DIFFERENT SKIN COLOUR(ESSPECIALLY DARK SKINNED)

WHATEVER YOU TRY TO PRETEND, YOU ARE WHAT YOU ARE!!!!!!!

Before i start my story, i would like to thank all those working in construction sector. Without u guys, we will not have a home to stay or a office to work.

Nowadays im seeing more and more foreign workers almost everywhere in singapore.

I dont mind if they work those area that locals dont want. But nowadays they are taking jobs whereby we the locals want. So where will our locals gonna work? ? If u said foreign workers is cheaper, that bullshit! ! ! That story was history. Nowadays their salary are as good as locals. I give u a very good example. I have been working for about 10yrs in this big company. In my office 3/4 are foreign workers and their salary is as good as locals.
Most of my local friends who does not have a job, would love to work in this company. They dont even ask for more salary, yet cant get in. In my 10yrs working in this company, i have never seen so many foreign workers in one office. Like i said, i dnt mind if they work in construction or cleaner or those unwanted job. .

If this trend continues, our future generation who are LOCALS, our own LOCALS, including the graduates would not be able to enjoy the fruits of their hard work of many years studying. Coz they will find difficulty finding a place in the workforce due to foreign workers grabbing away all the job here in this very tiny tiny island.
Our young singaporeans study so well n yet could not get a job. . How our locals gonna live here.
I hope the goverment think about this for a moment , please!!

They are seriously getting lesser pay as they have no CPF and medical benefits so thats the reason why they pay seems to equal urs, in fact its not

To all foreign workers, Please forgive the true blue idiots that shares our nationalty. He may not realise that the stink he smells is actually his own B.O.

Posted by One Ton of Berak* on 20 July, 2008 - 3:10am

As a true-blue S'porean, born and brought up here, I dislike having so many foreigners in our midst. Hell, we've too many people on this little island and I dislike the govt, among many other things, for wanting to boost our population beyond 4.5m. I'm reasonably wealthy and I don't care for stinking angmos flooding into my country thinking that just becos they pay taxes and applying for PR is a relatively easy process, they have a right to be here. I don't mind people visiting but staying over really cramps my space.
And for all the bleeding suffering foreign workers here, I sympathise with your predicament but hell, we have our own poor and suffering and it's not right for you to compete with them for opportunities. Pls take your destitute arse and go suffer back in your own country. I don't like what our govt says and does and you can be sure I won't vote for the PAP in the next election.

"stinking angmos"?? - We have a word for you - "WANKER"! Hope the authorities get a hold of your racist little asse's IP address on this post and give you the caning you deserve. Guess what - it's not just your country, it's mine too! Like it or not, little man! Thank God most Singaporeans are caring and accepting wonderful people - you will meet your judgement one day.

Mate - I'm very happy... :D just don't like people who are racist.

A wanker is not a whiner - it's someone who plays with themself.

Keep going Aaron buddy - doesn't bother me. Like I said, I love my new country whether you like it or not... and I'm very, very happy. Don't really know who the whiner is :p

A wanker is a person who plays with themself - an Aussie term coined probably even way before you were born.

Anyway, you've gone way off topic - what does this have to do with people telling 'stinking ang mos' to go home? The thread is pretty much dead, and I'm not gonna waste anymore of my precious and happy life responding to such a little brain. I have too many other things to do in my new HOME country of Singapore. God bless you and your other racist friend!

round 1 goes to the aussie. aaronkwok pea brain is reduced to name calling. ashamed to call pea brain sgpean. give us a bad name. apologise to all foreign workers for him.

Ha name caller. Wonder where he got this from. Did I introduce wanker and pea brain (maybe that's what AussiePB stands for) into the vocab?

Anyway what's it to you, Mr 3rd party? (And I don't think you are really a 3rd party because Mr AussiePB was logged in while I typed my last message, and also around the time you typed yours.)

What is this post all about??? I'm Australian, my wife Shanghainese - we moved to Singapore to live here 2 years ago... we live in Woodlands - you wanna talk about getting eyeballed and stared at? - spend a day in our shoes!!! The biggest offenders are local aunties...

Yeah I agree on the statement above! hahahah..so true.. based on my own experience ;-)

Posted by Angela* on 5 July, 2008 - 9:55pm

So are you trying to say that Singaporean never do that? Oh well, I've seen a lot of Singaporean do worse than foreigner. Anyway, you're quite racist and arrogant. So if there's no construction worker who are willing to be paid much much lower than singaporean, will you replace them? Let me tell you here that they are deserved to be respected and to be treated well here, because: they are working over time from 8 am to 12 am, after finish job still have to spend a few hours to cook in order to cut cost because their pay is too low, got only a few hours rest before loaded into lorry to bring to the site, willing to work over the weekends, and the pay is only $ 15-50 per day. Are you willing to do that? If not, don't open your mouth before think properly.

What is this post all about??? I'm Australian, my wife Shanghainese - we moved to Singapore to live here 2 years ago... we live in Woodlands - you wanna talk about getting eyeballed and stared at? - spend a day in our shoes!!! The biggest offenders are local aunties...

As for litter - why presume it's the foreigners? - come and have a look at the footpath along Woodlands Ave 7 sometime - it's disgusting... the locals that dispose of their litter where I live need to take more pride in their surroundings. I think the best thing is for police to spend a couple of hours a week and hand out fines to the offenders - maybe this will deter them (and at the same time, they can fine the illegal bike riders on the narrow footpaths on Ave 7 - it's dangerous for the older people, and those like us with babies... both the litter and bike riding issues are a matter of respect for the environment and the fellow human being, reagrdless of a person's nationality).

What a very narrow-minded generalization this post reeks of.

OK, so we've been told, we got to have low corporate taxes so that foreigners want to come here. That's OK. We pay crippling taxes through GST and car ownership, maybe that will help keep us afloat. We cut back on social services and become fiscal conservatives. But we don't expect foreigners to come and brag about their taxes, as though it's such big a deal. Why not go back to Australia and pay what Australians are paying on income tax? We know that our government performs blowjobs in people like you to entice you to stay.

As for littering - some of us have long memories and we remember that it didn't use to be so bad 10 years ago before they opened the floodgates to foreigners. Draw your own conclusions. People who have gone through the system are already brainwashed, so it's alright. But what about the rest?

Posted by aaronkwok* on 1 July, 2008 - 12:09pm

I do agree with the author here, these foreign trash, especially the upper class ones, are getting too arrogant these days. They talk too loud and they can't produce good results but they are great sympathisers to the bosses. It is not as if the locals can't fit into the better jobs but these trash are here to fight for the jobs in this already saturated and overpopulated island. I know some of you will say that I'm incompetent, say what you will. Wait till the day when you become another victim and let's see who's sorry.

But you see most of them are rejects from their own country. They can't make it there so they go to places that lower the bar. Most of them want to go to England and the states but their next best stop is here if the chance is there for them to take flight they will.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 14 June, 2008 - 12:04am

To all the people making the statements about quality of work, etc of foreigners... I'm here because I choose to do my global role from a more 'central' location with easier access to most Asian countries to which I travel. If I wasn't here, nor would my role - the talent was just not available here (this is not a demeaning statement - there are many highly qualified and talented Singaporeans, but to my particular job, there is noone in Singapore with the education and experience required - this is a fact!)... why bag mixing cultures when Singapore is so in need of population growth (the higher quality the better) to sustain the future?

Finally - how many Singaporeans have migrated to my country of heritage for study or work? Literally thousands - I have no problem with this at all, we live in a global era - but some of the comments here are downright hypocritical if you stop to think about it.

My home is now Singapore and we love living here, and are here for the 'long haul' - most locals here are caring, accommodating and respectful of other cultures (I have many, many close firends here)... there is just a small minority posting comments on this thread who I feel sorry for - so much hatred and lack of intelligence or tolerance... you quite happily accept all the tax dollars I pay here to boost your economy, so stop whinging!!

Just imagine the other way round. If we locals go to their country and work like them.. How would you feel if they treat you the same way. Even the PRCs from china are irritating to us all. They speak loudly, spit wherever they want, dig their noses and flick their "black gold" wherever they want, even they are also smelly..so what can you do about it? Nothing! They government needs them..so we have no choice but to accept them. They have come from their motherland to work here. If we singaporeans are willing to do what they are doing at their price then these people shouldn't be here in the 1st place. But since we are not willing to do the dirty job, the government has to employ these people to do it.

So the best thing is.. just accept them. Maybe if you feel pity for them, just buy them a drink or chat with them (if you know their language). So think what if you were in their shoes?

again.

cos..... india and bangladesh no more space. so they come here to populate and make spore smell like them. its a conspiracy by da gahmen. Msia saw thru dis cleber disguise and retaliate. We are doom.... what we need is Dettol and Lots of Antiseptic to clean up spore image. And maybe a few container ships to send them back or a huge bulldozer just push them off east coast park and let them sail to msia.

Fact. Singapore is made up of Chinese, Malay and eurasian and westerners. Rest are just illegal alien...

I feel pity and remorseful at the same time with what you posted. I never imagined that any Singaporean (a Chinese Singaporean, for that) would even have the guts to say this. So I thought that Singapore prides itself in being multi-cultural. Truly, there are things that you cannot see easily just like the racist qualities of some (I am using some cause I believe there are a lot of more rational Singaporeans out there).

With your depiction of how to push them off East Coast park or use container ships is simply deplorable and sick. And just to mention your bias for westerners and eurasians in your last sentence. I would have believed your arguments if you ruled out also the whites. But no, you singled out the Indians and the Bangladeshi. So this is simply racist.

Singapore has an ever increasing population and dwindling land size. The reason is because the government is letting more foreigner especially from india or bangladesh come and be PR in Singapore. Why. shortage of workers?
Impossible... there are alot of foreign workers. Thanks to them for building our infrastructure and all. However. There are those that get drunk and cause disgraceful act. I personally have witnessed this kind of acts first hand. They sit under the block with dozens of beer bottles. They leave the place in a mess. There are those who are hold hands. As in male to male? Errmmm.. I personally dont like too much ppl coming to singapore to settle down. In 10 years time spore will be like UK where the local disses the foreigners esp refugees from middle east and such. How i know this? My own friend is British. And he hates how jobs are given to them instead of their own people.

seriously lar... stop thinking of them as foreign workers and start thinking of them as humans cause whatever you said they do, singaporeans oso got do. and ah biao ar, password protecting your post don't really help your case any.

I know what you can do what you find anyone, anyone at all, staring at you. I've done it before (but it may not always work though).

Just ask him whether he's had his meal.

I was at Little India the other day and I saw someone looking at me for a very long time, so I went up to him and asked, 'Dey, suppra-ma?' I don't think he understood because that's Tamil (and not the correct romanisation although phonetically close) and he was probably Bangladeshi.

But I accompanied the question with the thumbs-up signal and he nodded vigorously, so I went on my way.
