Trackback from The Pro Bono Columnist:

She’s every bit the girl next door I would pass by when roaming the library without knowing she could write heartfelt songs and actually sing them well with her Norah Jones-esqe voice....

more genuine musical talent and sincerity than either the p65 hip hop number or the MDA rap. and no waste of taxpayer's money. bravo.

THIS IS GOOD???

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 17 December, 2007 - 11:57pm

That was what I was thinking too!!!

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 18 December, 2007 - 3:41am

Yes, this is GOOD!!!

yeah agree... she cannot even tune her guitar to be in-tune i wont expect anything so great to come out anyway...

Posted by natasha* on 19 September, 2008 - 11:35am

she's awesome! congrats ling!

Trackback from Larkin...who? Ling86...who?:

That's I guess her way of saying no matter how we plan, or how we hope, eventually it will just end up as failures.

An irony, as this song of her, is definitely a great success. Congratz! ...

this song sounds like that ten million songs I've heard. Ten million people before me said that this song sounds like that other ten million songs they've heard and that ten million songs were heard.

Posted by Wakaka* on 18 December, 2007 - 1:24pm

Pretty would be pushing it.

Posted by Anonymous Chimp* on 18 December, 2007 - 2:56pm

Not fantastic but not bad either. No need to be so harsh with the criticism, the girl's got some talent.

Erm.. the girl has pitch problems and being able to sing in tune does not equate to talent.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 18 December, 2007 - 10:30pm

Erm.. the girl wrote her own song. And I bet it's better than any song you've ever written, if you even know how to.

Posted by Anonymous kk* on 20 December, 2007 - 3:51pm

Erm.. anybody can write a song like that which is based on the most cliched chord sequences, has no variety throughout the entire duration. And there are many who can write better songs than that.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 20 December, 2007 - 8:40pm

why dun you show us the "easy" song that you have written?

Posted by Luther Blissett* on 21 December, 2007 - 11:46pm

1. I use a pseudonym here obviously because I don't want to associate it with my real idenity.
2. If I were to write a song that's worth showing to the real world, I'd release it under my real name, or at least with my real face on it, and people would not associate that with my aaronkwok pseudonym. (And if you have to ask why you're obviously not a songwriter.)

But for argument's sake let's assume that I have never written a song in my life. I'm still entitled to state my opinion about her work, especially since I'm also backing it up with reasons.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 22 December, 2007 - 1:53am

1. becos u are a coward
2. since u nvr a songwriter (no matter how eager u will like to be one).. it will nvr happen..
3. no reason needed for the above 2 opinion... as i am entitled to comment too..

Posted by Luther Blissett* on 22 December, 2007 - 10:33am

Oh come on I can't believe that a coward is calling me a coward.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 22 December, 2007 - 9:04pm

no one as u to believe it...

becos " I'm still entitled to state my opinion about YOU"

Posted by Luther Blissett* on 22 December, 2007 - 10:06pm

That's true, I'm not saying that I'm a songwriter, and I'm not saying that I'm not. As as for your opinion which you are perfectly entitled to give, it's quite clear that it is nothing more than speculation. Whereas my opinion about a song that I've heard before unfortunately carries more weight.

I am also not calling you a coward by the way, you're the one saying that ppl who don't use their real names are cowards and I'm taking your word for it.

I'm guessing what you mean by "no one as u to believe it" because we're never really sure what that means.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 22 December, 2007 - 11:58pm

"no one ask you to believe it"..

plus.. u think ur opinion carries more weight is ONLY you think so... and is nothing more than speculation...

Posted by Luther Blissett* on 23 December, 2007 - 12:57pm

Luther Blisset I think you are sounding really stupid and more stupid as the argument goes on lol...sorry, i'm being honest

Posted by I'm not Singaporean* on 19 September, 2008 - 11:39am

I also don't want to be engaged in an extended argument with other people about the merits of her performance. Like anyone else I want to see Singaporean musicians do well even though that will not stop me from giving constructive feedback. I am also not pleased to note that as of now somebody has hacked her site.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 22 December, 2007 - 2:02am

Excellent!
i just wonder how all these armchair critics fails to ackownledge the recording was done in a not so perfect environment...

Posted by Luther Blissett* on 18 December, 2007 - 11:36pm

There is nothing wrong with the singing or the performance. It was alright.

The songwriting leaves much to be desired though, and you do not need a perfect environment. Songwriting is a purely mental activity and therefore you can write songs when driving, walking, showering, shitting, fucking.

And for those ppl who think that 21 is young, Billy strayhorn wrote "Lush Life" when he was 16, Brian Wilson did "Pet Sounds" when he was 23, Van Morrison did "Astral Weeks" when he was 23. Stevie Wonder had written almost all of his best stuff by the time he was 26. When you are talking about songwriting, 21 is not young.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 21 December, 2007 - 9:32pm

i think she has a pretty okay voice. it could be better, considering that it was recorded with just a normal webcam and speaker(i guess), not like with professional rec studios. give the girl some credit la. insult her for what :)

Posted by Jane Tsai* on 19 December, 2007 - 12:37am

Well all of you harry balls & swinging dicks can try to do the same.

Sing, that is.

Can't ? then shut the fuck up and enjoy the clip.

I did.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 19 December, 2007 - 4:17pm

I found that one of these things was easier to do than the other.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 19 December, 2007 - 6:22pm

aaronkwok does have a point, by the way, he never did insult the girl, all he did was give a few opinions of which were true. the chords repeat themselves.. a nice voice which isn't quite yet enough to catapult her to superstardom, and lastly a face which would definitely qualify as pleasant-looking, but pretty/beautiful is definitely not the word to be used for her

i can't grasp why you, luther, would feel the compulsion to check back here day by day defending her. i loved the song, as a fact, but i can also see it's shortcomings. can't you do the same?

while aaron is putting forth actual thought into his posts, yours are just typical online singaporean fanboy flames.

lastly - "plus.. u think ur opinion carries more weight is ONLY you think so... and is nothing more than speculation..."

aaron's posts carry more weight because he doesn't blindly step forward gunning away his mouth with no actual material. and while i'm at it, we're all using monikas, so stop with that bs holier-than-thou attitude about cowardice in an online environment.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 23 December, 2007 - 5:02pm

1. u have to ask why aaron go thru post by post discrediting her everyday and on everyone's post... than asking why i going after a nobody like him...

2. quoting some extreme examples does not make himself more valid... if thats is the case.. pls ask him to write letter after letter on our politician's pay... i pretty sure there are more example for him to quote...

3. i nvr say he insulted the gal.. pls dun put words into my mouth...

4. i nvr say there is no shortcoming... and again.. u puting words into my mouth..

5. sorry sir.. the typical armchair singaporean is u ..not me... cos u keep puting words into my mouth...

6. no hollier than u thingy here... dun flatter him here.. he is going post after post repeating his same lame point.. u should ask him what the f is wrong with him first.. btw ... he is not the only critics.. but he is the only one flooding all others post!!

i am merely making him eating his medicine...

no happy?

It is truly an honour for me to be sharing this forum with a great man. When I am on my deathbed I will look back upon this particular incident and conclude that my life only has meaning because I have once shared this space with a great man.

A man who can do no wrong.

I've not insulted her but then again there's everything wrong with what I said about her.

It's not alright to flood this forum with "critics" but you are only the star of this thread.

You think that her performance is not perfect but you are not one of the "critics".

Everybody is sitting on an armchair whereas god knows what you're sitting on. Probably they have not experienced this special transcendence you have achieved while listening to her little clip which unfortunately is no longer available.

It's alright that you've kept trying to stick the label of failed songwriter on me (it doesn't stick because I have refused to answer this question) but it's not alright when people "put words into your mouth".

I am only a nobody but you've spent a lot of time answering all my posts (or maybe not a lot of time since your replies don't make any sense at all.)

It's not alright for other people to make personal attacks but you've only called anonymous coward a "boy" and you've only "given me a taste of my medicine".

But given that you are the arbiter of justice it's probably for a good cause ya? I bet that when you shit it doesn't smell bad.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 25 December, 2007 - 3:32am

having exchange of words in this forum and u r honoured??!! .. u have no life..

1) for the 3rd time... i am telling u again.. i nvr say u insulted her... i am merely replying ur lame comments...
2) her performance is not perfect doesn't mean u have to flood with ur lame comments like..
" anybody can write a song like that which is based on the most cliched chord sequences,"
anybody?? and u can't ?? how lame is that...

"I found that one of these things was easier to do than the other."
and u now admit u can't do this "easy thing"???

lamer..

3) u are not a failed songwrite cos u are nvr one to start with...
4) well... he is the one who refer me as young first... u dun understand the ang mo he wrote?
5) yes... u r a nobody and i totally agree with that... and this reply only took me less than 5 minutes of my life.. no big deal..
6)dun bet... cos my shit smell as shitty as ur breathe..

now get off my non-elite ah beng face !

Posted by Luther Blissett* on 26 December, 2007 - 5:04pm

get off your non elite ah beng face?

You were the one getting into my face in the first place asshole. If you stepped on the wrong toe why should you get off easy?

Posted by aaronkwok* on 27 December, 2007 - 10:29am

The best way to groom a troll is to act like one
-
`Such sockpuppets will typically advance foolish straw man arguments which their opponents can then easily refute`

me so scare..

how does it feels like being pwned time and again??

tell me leh...

Posted by Luther Blissett* on 27 December, 2007 - 7:11pm

You ask me? I don't know because it doesn't happen to me.

But if I were to guess, maybe the person would start getting panicky, start writing a lot of things that don't make sense, and say stupid things like "now get off my non-elite ah beng face !" which makes that person no better than that pig Wee Shu Min. But at least she knows that it is "get out of my face" and not "get off my face" because I'm not sitting on it.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 28 December, 2007 - 8:48am

Luther Blissett,

I'm no friend of this aaronkwok, but you're making yourself sound stupid. I was reading through you and aaron's exchanges and was like WTF? There is nothing to credit you with regards to your "argument" if you have any at all. You brought zero insights into the issue whereas aaronkwok did based on facts and backups.

I do not understand where your frustration lies nor do I know why are you so riled up when someone's merely stating a soft criticism. But I'm of the impression that you're young and infatuated with this girl and not her talents.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 24 December, 2007 - 2:11pm

trolls are not limited by reason
-

dun assume too much.. boy..

school holiday ending...

and yet.. u failed to rebutted any of my point except personal attacks...

lastly.. i nvr said u are a frd of aaron... u r puting words into my mouth AGAIN...

heart got ghost? :P

Posted by Luther Blissett* on 24 December, 2007 - 11:38pm

typical singaporeans.

go get drunk, and get laid.

then shut up.

Posted by ling86* on 27 December, 2007 - 1:02am

If I were you I'd worry more about my next gig, try to get my video back up, maybe even learn a few more chords, rather than think too hard about what people are saying about my stuff. It's a bit easier to namedrop Larkin than to write like him.

I'd like to see you tell the other 10000 ppl who left comments for you on youtube to shut up. I hope you're just some stupid imposter.

Stupid moron who thinks that the world revolves around women's pussies.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 27 December, 2007 - 6:35pm

both luther and aaronkwok are full of shit.

Seems like aaronkwok is starting to lose it

Yes sounds like he is starting to lose it.

Haven't it occured to him that ling86 who posted earlier may not be ling86?
