Update on the old trishaw uncle bullied by 3 ang mohs - Video interview

omy.sg said:

Pls try to understand that for this very reason of excusing these scum/ chavs, Britain now suffers for being that backward monkey island of Europe.

AND to prove that they are jerks and idiots, one of them posted it on Youtube. Good for them, now everyone knows who they are! THEY could have not posted that clip, they could have stopped if they geniuinly felt that it was wrong. They are just sickos!

be it anywhere around the world, mocking and laughing (whether high or not) at the expense of someone else is definitely morally wrong. An undeniable fact is that he's an elderly man working to live, then shouldn't they show a basic sense of respect? It doesn't just reflect on their common sense, but also the way they carry themselves, undeserving adults. If this is the kind of respect one gets in a civilised western culture, Thanks, but no Thanks.

Of course I will agree with you that laughing at the old man is wrong. But I don't think you understood my question: are they laughing at the old man or laughing at their own ridiculous situation?

The other thing is, what sort of a demeanour are you supposed to put on when you're on one of those trishaws? What is the purpose of those trishaws? Transportation? Definitely not. It has to be entertainment, because if it's not one of these two, then it's begging. On one hand, entertainment is not the same as these guys laughing at the old man. But do you want them to look as though a funeral is taking place? You can criticise the tourists all you want for laughing but did you take into account that the trishaw driver is really an entertainer, or a tour guide?

It all goes back to what's really wrong with the picture. How is it that a poor old man is responsible for entertaining our tourists? Either they're having a good time (in which case they're insensitive) or they're being respectful (in which case they're not having a good time.) I know there are people who visit Africa to see how wretched it is but I don't think most tourists are like that.

The real problem is that our trishaw driver here has an impossible job.

compassion should not work both ways for certain people such as these. People do make mistakes and I'm pretty sure everyone here can recognise that. But some mistakes are unpardonable, and being compassionate would only extinguish that sick desire in them for a short period of time. There are invariably consequences to every action, or more appropriately, a mistake, and this is just what they deserve.

There are a lot of mistakes made by people here. I was very angry when I saw the video for the first time, but after I learnt that trishaws in UK are very different from here I saw things differently.

To be sure that we are using the word "mistake" in the same way, I don't mean mistake in that they bullied an old man they shouldn't have. I mean mistake in that they jumped onto a trishaw thinking that it was the same as back home, it could sit 3 ppl, you could go places with it, etc. The first mistake is unforgivable, but the second is not.

You can see the video, but are you interpreting it correctly? When they are laughing, is it because they are high? Is it because they're thinking "oh my god I'm riding on the wrong vehicle, I made a mistake", or is it that they're mocking the old man?

When they said, "this trishaw is so slow", did they go and ask the man to hurry up? Or did they say, "this is stupid, let's get a cab"?

When they refused to pay up, were they thinking, "he's an old man and I can bully him", or were they thinking, "I'm paying $10 for a 100 metre ride?"

I still think they're really rude and should have paid up. But if they paid up it would have been just harmless foolery. And I do think that Singaporeans are making a bigger deal of this than it deserves.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 7 November, 2007 - 1:09am

I've got a few facts that virtually everybody has overlooked.

1. The ride was around 100m. You can study the video for yourself: started at the junction between Hill St and River Valley Road, and ended before Funan Centre. 100m. I still say that they should have paid, but $10, $15 for 100m is quite expensive.

Remember the trishaw driver saying that he didn't think much about that? And that the only problem was that he didn't pay? He's right. Driving 3 giggling men for 100m is not a traumatic incident.

2. They do have trishaws in the UK. These trishaws are driven by youngsters, and can seat 3 people. Those 3 Brits probably made the mistake of thinking it's the same in Singapore.

http://www.bugbugs.co.uk/

3. People are a little stupid when they're high.

Based on these 3 points, I think our reaction is exaggerated.

Posted by aaronkwok* on 5 November, 2007 - 11:46pm

Nevertheless, this is no excuse for idiocy - three people piling onto a trishaw visibly driven by an old man and expecting him to move fast.

Drunk men can be stupid to the point of raping women when they are high, jailing them is an exaggerated reaction in your view, yes?

Be more compassionate.

I don't understand what "no excuse for idiocy" means. If you're an idiot then you're an idiot too bad for you, what can you do?

Everybody makes mistakes. Thing is, they were idiots for 3 minutes, then realised their mistake, and got off. In order to rape a woman, you need to make a mistake and persist with it. The trishaw rider was complaining about not being paid, remember, not about cycling 100m. Who's going to complain about that? I say they should have paid, but then again how much would you have paid for 100m?

I'm not saying they're not assholes, but compassion also works both ways and also applies to understanding that people make mistakes.

What in these three Brits 's mind was making fun of weak people, that why they posted the video at Youtube.Talk about great western civilization and human right which are all so false.
