Difference between Singapore and Malaysia

Esther gives a comparison between Malaysia and Singapore when she was here in Singapore for the Great Singapore Sale.

Cost of living is way cheaper! Dollar-to-dollar, without converting, I could get a chicken chop rice for 3 dollar 50 cents! Also, their most expensive MRT ticket price is 1 dollar 70 cents. While I have to pay 3 ringgit 70 cents for one trip to KL. And they get discounts if they utilize the EzyLink card while we pay the same price (and risk being overcharged) when we use our Touch ‘n Go.

This is ridiculous. How can you ever do a proper comparison, if you just go "dollar-to-dollar" without converting?

If she went to Indonesia and started counting in rupiah, she would say, "Oh, dollar-to-dollar, without converting, Indonesia is one of the most expensive countries on this planet."

I'm not saying that Singapore is cheap or not cheap; just saying that you cannot compare the cost of living in different countries using such a method!!

Esther, not very good, try something else like everything is so cheap in Singapore compared to Japan and other first world countries and our salaries are so high that all of us can afford to buy HDB flats.

i thought converting the currency is not accurate to measure standard of living either. Of course cannot just compare dollar to dollar.

Rather, should compare the amount to their salary.

If I'm not mistaken, the Salary in Singapore is comparable to Malaysia's (with no conversion). That makes a $3.50 chicken chop rice equivalent to 10% out of $3500. While RM10 chicken chop rice would have been 28% out of RM 3500.
Anyway, I'm only saying that the cost of living in Singapore is cheaper judging from daily consumption/activities like transportation and food. I am aware that housing and utilities in Sg are higher ;)

So chill ppl... I'm not dumb.
*Peace*

Sorry, I meant 0.1% and 0.28% respectively...

you're ridiculous .. how can chicken chop rice be 10 ringgit? dont you know 10 ringgit is enough to get you through the whole day in malaysia? sometimes, you still have a few ringgit left ..

what can you do with 3.50 singaporean dollars?

ignorant ...

Either she is ignorant or anti-Malaysia. Maybe she should migrate here and be another foreign talent.

Actually, apart from big-ticket expenses like housing and cars, food and several other items are relatively cheap in Singapore -- when you compare them to typical salaries.

I have friends from Manila who earn Philippine salaries but love shopping in Singapore because they can get a lot of stuff here at lower prices than in Manila. Food is often cheaper here as a percentage of typical salaries, particularly because hawker centers are so popular.

Of course the converse is also true -- folks living in Singapore can also find a lot of things cheaper in Manila. It's all a matter of perspective. Cheers...

you are weird..

Self ever work in Singapore for years...Singapore cost of living is better than Malaysia...
For example, your salary as an Account Exe in Malaysia is RM2,500 and in Singapore is S$2,500, but the things in Singapore is cheaper, for eg: Dove Shampoo sell in Malaysia cost RM23.00 and Singapore only sell @ S$8.00.

After return back to Malaysia, i realise Malaysian gotta work like hell in order to have a better lifestyles...but Singapore you may just go travel around the world every year...

Someone needs to get their currencies straight. First of all according to XE.com Currency conversion , the $1.70 SGD ticket would have been $4.60 ringgit, which is more expensive than the $3.70 ringgit malaysian ticket. The $3.50 SGD chicken rice would have been equal to about $8.36 ringgits. Therefore Singapore is more expensive than Malaysia.

in MY - inexpensive on stuffs/foods. (eg Clothes, street Foods, restaurant foods)
in SG - Based on the living expenses, I would say SG got to spent more cents/dollars than MY.

i would only say that each country has their own goods and bads :) where there's so much things that can be compared.

malaysia more expensive la.. geylang chicken costs only 80 SGD and chicken in malaysia costs RM 230.. so singapore is cheaper =) plus singapore is better place to live in, less corruption, cleaner but can be bored after awhile, thats when u go to jb and convert all that sgd to cheap rm and buy all ur household goods, entertainment not to mention pump a full tank of petrol back to sg. in malaysia u gotta deal with being marginalized, fucked up education system, one sided goverment that only serves and protects one race,

Esther is right. S$2500 is equal to RM 5800. For a S$25000 job in Singapore, the Malaysian salary is RM 2500 not RM8500! So evrything by comparison is expensive in Malaysia. Tell me how can you survive on RM 10 a day and have plenty left. I would like to know.

i can't understand the information's that much summarized your work and make it more clearer by the way don't make it 2 long just make a summarized :)

Cost of living is calculated based on percentage(%) of SPENDING vs INCOME and NOT "who pays more after conversion".

Consider a freshgrad's AVERAGE income
Singapore SGD1800 per month
Malaysia RM1800 per month

And we take the price of Big Mac (I take big mac because the content is the same but price is different between 2 countries) and assuming I eat 30 Big Macs a month (just assuming)
Singapore- 3.60 x 30 = SGD108
Malaysia- 5.50 x 30 = RM165

Percentage of income spent on Big Macs:
Singapore = 6.00% of total salary
Malaysia = 9.16% of total salary
so averagely Singaporeans spend less of their income compare to Malaysians. If you wish to use conversion to justify your argument, you'll need to apply it on both INCOME and price of product.

The only thing that is expensive in Singapore is housing/rental by about 15% more compare to Malaysia.
