Porn Comic Book Saga in Singapore

Alvinology said:

If you saw News 5 at 9.30pm this evening (Wednesday, June 6, 2007) or the news on Channel 8, you’d have heard about the exposé: a graphic novel with overt sexual content was sold, unlabelled and not shrink-wrapped, at the recent book fair.

The informant, Rachel Chan, is my friend!....

If I might add my two cents’ worth, I have a feeling that this is just the beginning of a media hullabaloo, like the time they talked about whether cyclists should cycle on the road or pavement (thought that one would never blow over) and whether Singaporeans are truly happy.

don't they read what they import to the fair? hmmm..

Please, 15 year old nowadays are having sex. 99% of the guys in Singapore who have computers probably have porn stored. So what's all the fuss about a porn comic book?

"So, I called Rachel and asked her whether she knew that she could potentially be the Public Enemy No.1 of the local comics community. Apparently, the poor girl had no idea."

Well done Alvinism. You have just contributed to her being labelled as that.

Hey guys, here's my response to one particular comment I've read so far: http://alvinology.wordpress.com/2007/06/07/rachels-reply/.

Rachel's reply....

To be fair to Rachel, her intentions are good.

The problem of the situation is the almost knee-jerk reaction that the powers-that-be adopt when confronted with a problem. We either bochup regulations, or go totally postal with them.

I gather it was from HarperCollins and it was a graphic novel for mature readers. But it certainly was porn. Didn't catch the news but did they publish the title? Not sure which one, but was it "How to Make Money Like a Porn Star" by Rolling Stone writer Nei Strauss and Bernard Chang?

Slam the exhibitor for making the mistake, but please, spare us another meaningless moral crusade.

Oops, had meant to say "certainly WASN'T porn".... :-)

Yeah, if it was done by some well-known artist, nudity would've been called art and it would've fitted into Singapore's rhetoric about being a hub for the arts. But, oh well, since this is just a comic book, it must be porn.

"Dancing is my passion :p..and youtube is a platform for me to display another side of me which i otherwise would not have the guts to do so coz in reality, i am really really a shy one.." :-) http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=kinkyexorcist

isn't it ironic that young children are still exposed to religions such as christianity and islam, which have large histories of violence and conflicts, and stories in their holy books that deal with death and violence?

if books with sexual content are banned, or restricted to 18 years and above (for example), i think religion should be made 18 years and above too, because our children have "impressionable minds"
