Why No Singaporeans in BusinessWeek's Asia's Best Young Entrepreneurs?

Kuzzuk.net said:

BusinessWeek released an interesting list of Asia's Best Young Entrpreneurs and surprise surprise there is not even one Singaporean in the list. On the other hand, Hong Kong that is comparable to Singapore in many ways have three of their entrepreneurs in the list.

even worse, why no women!!

even more so, most of the winners come from the IT/digital media industry, predominantly a male-orientied industry. how accurate is the report in saying these are asia's best young entrepreneurs? IT/media is the in-thing today but there are other forms of successful biznesses?

Meh. where are the women??

Anyone want to vote http://www.harro.com into the Businessweek survey. I volunteer to represent Singapore.

Maybe if we spruce up the Tommorrow.sg website, we might have 2 :)

and since IT is male-dominated, a lot of our boys lose out on time. NS mah.. i'm shure everyone knows someone who could've got his business off the ground if he didn't have to stay in camp 24/7. and then must rush to get a uni degree after they come out cos the girls are way ahead. how to take off business like that?

dude, its skewed towards democracies and and private sectors only.

planned economies aren't the american way.

Why can't you all accept the fact that Singaporeans aren't as good as you think? Deluded people.

All studies, including this one, are skewed one way or the other. It is true that it seems to have an IT and tech bias and the lack of women in the list is unbelievable. Well our boys do go for NS but what about our girls? On a personal front, I'm trying to be more daring and venture forth but something stops me. I'm not sure what and I'm not sure whether the things that stop me are personal or applicable to most Singapore residents?

There are some inherent problems in the mentality of young entrepreneurs in Singapore. Perhaps, if you rectify this, we might get one in Business Weekly....

I am kindda surprised by the pie chart that India and Indonesia have more than Hong Kong...

Think that we should stop comparing and do the real work. ...

Well, Singaporean can't really make good entrepreneurs lah... Like what even the government says, "Singaporeans have 3 things they are scared: Kia Si (scared to die), Kia Su (scared to lose, soreloser), Kia Bor (scared of wife, henpecked)". An ideal entrepreneur cannot scared of lossing, or rather, must be a big risk-taker.

Somehow this article by Dipankar Subba sets me thinking the entire day, about why .. other than the reason I myself gave. Mindset? Not hungry enough? Non-risk taker? Comfort zone? ..... External or internal factors or simply both mixed together?...

It might be a bit unfair to make sweeping statements here and there. From my experience, I have seen that there are lots of budding young entrepreneurs in Singapore all currently trying their hardest to make this grade... and boy they are going to get there soon.

One only needs to walk into any university here and open one's eyes to see the energy that is being put into new business ventures by a great deal of the students.

In the meantime, we need to encourage them as much as possible to make a mark on the world scene... Go Singapore Entrepreneurs go!

ps.. any one who is interested in a list of resources (both government and private) for local entrepreneurs please email me. Cheers!

Hmm... I do agree, but only to a certain point at a certain degree. Because the chances of entrepreneurs being successful is lesser then unsuccessful. And also, successful may not be long as well. It takes more then effort and hardwork to be an entrepreneur and do enterpreneur "job". I personally admires their spirit still though...

I'm proud to say that there are Singaporeans nominated for Businessweek's Best Young Entrepreneurs this year! Despite a recession, our youths are just as enterprising.
Go to http://images.businessweek.com/ss/08/10/1008_asia_young_entrepreneurs/22.htm
to see a nomination of Leonard Tan. He is a great inspiration to many, who could forgo his high paying job in Yahoo upon graduation from USA.

Many often said that the more you've invested in your education, the less likeyly that you'll strike out on your own since there's much more to lose if the business fail. This young man graduated with a masters from USA! Who says Singaporean men are more risk averse compared to others?

If you wish to support local entrepreneurs, give Leonard Tan a vote at http://images.businessweek.com/ss/08/10/1008_asia_young_entrepreneurs/13.htm
