Abuse or Discipline?

Jeremy Toh said:

Mind you, this is violent behaviour we saw. What constutitues discipline and how do we know if a teacher has crossed that line and abuses? Such information is not made known everyone, and I think what we saw today, with the verbal abuse we're subjected to, IT IS ABUSE.

Like what the others have said about in the previous post on punishment in school, i think it take 2 hands to clap but asking the father to go and die doesn't seem acceptable, especially when the teachers is considered mature enough to be handling a student who is still growing.

Before arriving at a conclusion, the context must first be established, that is, why the teacher apparently said that. Passing judgement without knowing the prevailing circumstances is at most subjective.
Frankly, I find excuses such as "teachers should be mature" and "students are still growing and learning" quite lame. Why?
Firstly, nobody is perfect and even the most mature adults have feelings and make mistakes. So everybody, young or old continue to grow and learn the lessons of life until they die. Age is not an indication of maturity level.
Secondly, if we seriously want to learn and be more mature, we have to learn from our (and others') mistakes. If the only thing we do is to point a finger at others, we will fail to recognize our own mistakes and be accountable for our actions. When we fail to be responsible for our actions, how can we learn and grow?
Thirdly, it is pointless to argue over who is right or wrong, because people will end up denying their faults and accusing others. It's happening right here. Isn't it more fruitful to ask, "What can I learn from this episode?"?
Lastly, whether you like it or not, there will always be conflicts between teachers and students. Difficulties encountered in the sheltered school environment, compared to challenges in the adult world are, I would say, peanuts. So, it'll be wiser to learn how to shoulder responsibility, handle conflicts and solve problems positively before leaving school for the real test of life.

"Yes, corporal punishment is the most quick and effective method form of discipline for unruly children. but as it is, it no longer has any place in today's society."...

Your teacher is so unreasonable. Maybe the press should write some article about poorly treated students in school. At the end of the day, teachers forget tt fact that we are all humans. equal in status. Knowing what is humiliation

last time we were taught about corporal punishment, nowadays i not sure if sch still talk abt this? I feel that teacher shld be given some guideline or manuel on what punisment/ behavior is consider acceptable and what kind is considered not acceptable. Nowadays teacher seem to lose control and start raging at student. Last time, when teachers lost control of their emotion, the most they can do is cry for female teachers and male teachers will just ask us to get out of the class.

When I was a teenager, students were more respectful, teachable, obedient, diligent, manageable etc. Teachers had lessons in the morning or afternoon only. Holidays were holidays. Parents looked up to teachers.

Do teachers have it easier now?

Back then, teachers were free to discipline and corporal punishment was allowed but hardly needed. Parent-teacher meetings? School counsellors? Truancy? Abortion? Smoking? Running away from home? Suicides? Never heard of them.

Why?

during my O's yr, my chinese teacher refused to allow me to resit my chinese paper. she refused to budge, till i got the subject head, her and my parents to sit down and talk things out. she relented, of cos.

i think sometimes the students have to really speak up, and let the others know about whats happening in their school, or in their class. cos otherwise, there are bound to be 'teacher bullying student' cases going on and about.

Recently, two teachers came into the limelight for the wrong reasons. One Chinese teacher asked the kids to hit the boy who didn't do the homework. The other insisted on public apology in the papers from the child who insulted him or her. ...
