Ang Moh Visiting Singapore

^tamago^ said take ur time to read the whole series, and maybe other countries. Its interesting to read about Singapore through the eyes of a visitor (even if there are many humorous mistakes in his description of Singapore)

there are legends that everything is forbidden in Singapore : you have death penalty for selling pornography, drug dealing, prostitution, and many years of jail for some type of political activities, for carrying guns as well as very high fines for spitting, littering, or smoking in public places

you can now smell a stink of India, infact we're near the famous Temple of Sri Mariammar
from the ugly stink and the wild noise of jungle music you can guess we're arrived :
i can't believe they can tolerate this open-air junk but it seems for the indu locals this is pretty normal and clean !
inside : cheap paintings and cheap carvings, reminding more of a nomad camp than a sacred Temple.

Dude seems a little prejudiced.

one kick-ass manner of traveling, very frank and open opinion of Singapore by a foreigner, sadly he doesnt know that singha beer originates from Thailand - the land of thousand smiles, rather than Singapore - the land of 4 million smiles (Think:IMF)

I keep wondering where 4 million comes from. Singapore citizenship is 3 million. Are we assuming authority to tell the 1 million foreigners on our soil, instructing them to "smile or get out"?

It's hilarious - you can't expect a foreigner to pick up the subtleties of our unique culture immediately. Nonetheless, I'm keeping my eyes out for the "religious tabloids" that are apparently prevalent on our main streets.

From the website "about us"
We believe in original content, unbiased content with as much detail as we can provide, as we believe that having our own copyrighted material is the key to keep users sharing their content and improve our service.

It doesn't seem to be unbiased from his photo caption. I didn't know that Sim Lim is world famous. Didn't know that the Tanjong Pagar railway station has "cheap" communist paintings. They're authentic aren't they? Just restored. Didn't kwow that shophouses are typical Singapore style. Always thought they are used to trick cheap tourist like him to visit Singapore. Didn't know Ajisen is a fast food restaurant. Didn't know that the centre point security guard is a police officer. I gonna tip toe when I pass by it the next time, les he arrest me. Didn't know that soft drinks sold to tourists are cheap. Wait till he visit sentosa. Didn't know the new MICA building is a German embassy. To think that the germans and italians were best buds back in WW2, he should recognised the german flag if he sees one. And Always thought Singapore weather hangs around 34C, not 40C.

Finally I know why he has problems with his spelling. He's Italian!

Makes you wonder how they won the world cup.

Play football no need to spell one.

Well, unbiased isn't the same as being accurate. I suppose he meant that the website does not promote any particular hotel/attraction/etc.

And yeah, what has spelling got to do with football?

Come on lah... why so serious? It's a foreigner's point of view, I would cringe in embarrassment if someone actually went to comment on his site about the various mistakes that he had made.

Actually that would be a kind soul doing him a favor to keep him from embarassment.

Posted by Anonymous** on 11 July, 2006 - 8:24pm

seems quite racist to me, especially against the indians.

Posted by Anonymous Coward1* on 11 July, 2006 - 5:52pm

his racism is very blatant.

I don't see it as racism, he is just being very honest (not that I agree with him).

Anyway, being over sensitive about racism is one sort of racism isn't it, cuz you unwittingly accredit it.

For all you know, some people are only here to pick a fight. Strange.

Posted by Anonymous** on 11 July, 2006 - 8:27pm

Yeah he is just being very honest about being racist..

maybe this guy can't spell, maybe he just couldn't be bothered.

but what on earth is a christian nun?

Give the guy a break. From the looks of it, he is trying to make a living from his travels. Isn't it better to email him privately to help him improve his website?
Charity beats nit-picking anytime, don't you agree?
And what better way to show the gracious side of Singaporeans?

Posted by Anonymous** on 11 July, 2006 - 11:12pm

What gracious side?

Posted by We are all Anonymous Coward* on 12 July, 2006 - 12:53am

Negative Anonymous Cowards will probably fail to see the graciousness in others.

Posted by Why so negative** on 12 July, 2006 - 5:39am

he might had said some harsh things but i don't expect him to embrace or even know about our culture the moment he arrives. it's the same for everyone. if you were to travel to some other country that is not similar to your native culture like say, Africa? i'm pretty sure you would have made similiar mistakes too.

I chanced upon this site through a most unflattering manner...However, what really drew me to the site is the multitude of photos of Tokyo 東京......

he's a very stupid ignorant foreigner :D

All foreigners are stupid and ignorant. thats why we shouldnt visit other countries where we'd end up as the ignorant ones

Interesting website, he is like a child before the age of 12, comments and captions without thinking, without reflecting, without facts. A good imagination and some creative thinking.

Accuracy is a negative (insert a suitable number here)

Nice photos though, some good shots.

Singapore will never have a chance to defeat India in terms of Business & Economy.

SINGAPORE - GDP = $222.7 Billion whereas INDIA - GDP = $4.156 Trillion.

Get your facts straight before stereotyping other races. Without foreign businessman (esp. Ang Moh), Singapore would probably be nothing of a kind. Compared to the numbers of chinese females working as hookers at Geylang Lorong 1 - 12 are tremendous. Need 0caculator if going to that place. They're not English speaking person either. Remember where does the English language came from? Is it from China and Singapore? Can you assume that by using Chinese Mandarin language will get you a better Job anywhere other than China and Singapore? I'm a natural born Chinese Singaporean who've seen racism through out this nation for many years. If you can't speak Mandarin you won't be able to work with a descent company even if you're recently graduated from Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge...etc University. The main reason why every jobs vacancies in Singapore are mostly taken by foreigners that is because we Singaporeans hardly improves our attitude and still have a tendency to insult them when we didn't achieve what we've been dreamin about. As a Singaporean i'm totally disgraced with such conduct. This is Singapore a.k.a Singapura (Multi Racial) not some sorta Chinalike god damned country where only Han-Chinese are allowed, others will be killed instantly or discriminated in such abusive way.

C'mon guys wake up! The year is almost reaching 2009 hence racism will lead us to nowhere and it is generaly uncivilised. 1 China is enough. Don't eat too much nasi babi. It's not good for your health though. There's always something else to eat rather than pork right? Talking about that, our pork are also imported from Australia. Don't believe me? Go to your nearest NTUC Fairprice, take a good look around the pork meat section and see for yourself then.

I forgot to mention my name is Alvin Seah in the above posting.
