Forum on the 2006 Singapore General Election at NUS

Mezzo said:

The last question was by a guy who wanted to recount his experiences with Opposition parties in the UK, to show how wonderful it is when you get an opposition. He ended off by announcing, "Majulah Singapura", which was awesome in an indefinite way, since it was quite obvious how he thought Singapura should progress.

Recommended by Anonymous Coward: "The forum was quite heavily attended by NUS students, just to watch Chiam See Tong in action. Quite a few giggle-worthy moments in the 2 hour session, including some inadverdant ones by Indranee Rajah. "

if i were there...i wld not argue base on Article 12 though.

i wld remind everyone that PM Goh made a national promise in 2005 to ALL singaporeans, regardless of political belief.

2. Providing for needs of older Singaporeans

5. Promise to Singaporeans
a. We are one people together
b. Growth and prosperity is for all Singaporeans to share
c. Provided you work hard and help yourself, we will help you to succeed
d. We will progress together, and not leave anyone behind

then i will draw an anology with the upgrading programme.

PAP is like the only doctor with the resources to do upgrading ( the medication).

There is a queue of patients waiting for to see PAP for the medication.
there is an elderly patient( Potong Pasir) with the worst symptons (SM Goh calls it 1950s syndrome)

Does the good Dr PAP deny the most deserving patient of medication because it is not your regular customer? Don't forget Potong Pasir pays all taxes and fees required for the medication.

do u keep lettting less urgent cases jump queue in front of Mr Potong Pasir? how long must the elderly Mr Potong Pasir wait?

i think Government has a moral obligation to consider the needs of all Singaporeans equally...

Hi...I like to test the following presumptions in your analogy:
1. "PAP is like the only doctor..."
No, there are other "doctors" but many patients kept going back to "Doctor PAP" . Who create the monopoly situation, patient or doctor? The one who inherits the medicine cabinet (win election) is the one who can dispense medicine.

2. "...Government has a moral obligation ..."
Government is not a person, just a bureaucratic entity. The people running the govt may have an election commitment to keep but you, as a citizen, have the responsibility to determine who runs the govt (e.g. vote, or run for election).

Don't whine about circumstances, just analyse your choices and make your decisions.

People go to the "Doctor PAP" because they have been conditioned to think that it is the only doctor available. The media has given "Doctor PAP" exclusive coverage (see today's newspapers).

Government is not a person, just a bureaucratic entity.

It is interesting to read one new PAP candidate saying the unlevel political playing field is fair because the Government is run like a business. In the businesss world, it is cut-throat, dog eat dog contest. All is fair and square, as long as the law allows it.

Well depends on whether u want your Government to be more than just your boss/slave master who is focused on the profit margins.

I look to a Government sharing the same moral values as myself. One which upholds the shared values of Justice and Equality. That's why i 'whine' and point out the inequities.

there is no such thing as justice and equality, nor has any civilisation succeeded in creating a utopian society based on these values. you should be glad that you arent in a fiefdom where teens are whored and slavery is rampant

`I don't believe the statistics put out .. The man in the street doesn't know whether he's on thin ice or solid rock`

Yeah. This "Justice and Equality" thing which is in our pledge, no less, is quite the opposite of the "business world" that the PAP candidate mentioned. They will have to decide which one they want, they can't have it both ways.

actually they can. its called lip service

`But the explanation was really very simple. The van had previously been the property of the knacker, and had been bought by the veterinary surgeon, who had not yet painted the old name out. That was how the mistake had arisen`

Guess more people need to be aware of this......

the renewal is all a farce. it is a continuation of the old as long as the veterans, key players, are glued in their seats of power whose core doctrines remain unchanged! the recruits are of the same mold except, glib in double talk. typical of legal snakes and doctored truths. all will mirror the father howbeit in subtle shades of grey. the direction still the same - tower of destruction. the new drug is giving in to youthful exuberance( lusts in the guise of hopes, concerns and asperations) rather than fleeing as preferred.

all i see is annual six to seven digits number adding into their wealth for pushing streets medicine to sickly beholden . very sweet first taste followed by a bitter stab in the stomach for those bend in the ways of wealthy numbered elites who continue to perpetuate a system of self enrichment.

the message is to join an exclusive club at $666 - you may add the elusive (m) at the end if you are obedient ok?!!
