Starbucks Open House

Barffie said:

Of course! With the horde queuing up, island-wide, for FREEEEEEE drinks for Starbucks’ Open House, how could they not lose their bucks? It’s prime-time for coffee drinkers, you know?

How the heck did I miss this? Is this still going on?

haha. i think its pretty good a gimick. singaporeans love freebies. judging by the response, it seemed rather successful.

Sporeans lurve freebies cos after paying for their house mortgage and COEs, they have very little disposal income left. So they have to scrimp and save despite all appearance of wealth.

cckroach lazy to Q...

Trackback from todaealas - Starbucks:

Singaporeans are famous for their kiasu-ness, so they'll go to great lengths (pun intended) to get freebies....

I think it's quite stupid to queue up so long for a $5 drink. And I was quite shocked to read that when last year this same thing occurred, the average amount contributed by the public was only slightly more than $1 per drink! I think Singaporeans should have given at least a bit more than that.

5 dollars q so long already...10 dollars..q overnight i bet..heheh...make that 3 nights!

it was supposed to be a charity thing. but nooo...people had to just be so greedy and take the drink for FREE FREE FREE!!!! i think starbucks should stop this kinda charity promotion because clearly, those greedy enough to queue up just because its 'free' means that they won't give a shit about at least contributing the cost price of the drink to help others.

I didn't go for this Open House thing. Perhaps people were greedy, but I don't think they should be held against for "[taking] the drink for FREE FREE FREE". The full-page pamphlet distributed in "The Starbucks Experience" states:

* INVITATION *

Starbucks Christmas
Open House 2005

Come to any Starbucks Coffee

8 Dec (Thur)
From 5pm -- 7pm

and enjoy your favourite Starbucks beverage* on us

Yes, it's on the house!

We are passionate about offering the highest quality coffee to our customers.
We are also committed to contributing positively to the community.
=========================
Make a donation of your choice and 100% of the proceeds will go to The Salvation army. Come and enjoy your favourite Starbucks beverage* and make a difference to our community.

* One redemption per customer - Tall-sized beverage only - Bottled beverages not applicable - Event only in Singapore

In the pamphlet, everything before the horizontal bar was enclosed by a border and highlighted. The donation text was comparatively small at the end of the page.

Reading the pamphlet gives me the impression that it is a Starbucks gimmick and they're treating everyone to a drink, and the charity thing is separate and by-the-way.

If it were supposed to be a charity thing, Starbucks should have named it a "Charity Open House 2005" and emphasized on the charity part more.

I doubt most of the people queing even knew it was a charity thing. Anyway charities these days aren't supposed to be trustworthy anymore, right?

I queued twice at two starbucks. I donated $5.90 (ok: I bought the card that came with the drink)
