Biologists pick Singapore: TWO TOP CANCER RESEARCHERS TURN STANFORD DOWN OVER STEM-CELL DELAYS

Mercury News said:

Two of the nation's top government biologists are moving to Singapore instead of Stanford University, worried by delays in the allocation of $3 billion in taxpayer funds allocated for stem-cell research by Proposition 71...

``It is a loss for Stanford and a loss for America,'' Weissman said. ``Without a doubt, they are the best people I know to find out which genes are altered to cause cancer.''

``When they do their work, it will be for Singapore,'' he said. ``They'll conduct their clinical trials in Singapore. The first place their work will be patented and used will be Singapore.'

Not sure if the MSM has covered this, if not, you read this first on Tomorrow.sg."

It's a great priviledge for us Singaporeans to be the Scientists' Guinea Pigs. Or is it?

Well not exactly. The first person that willingly recieve the clinical test might be the saviour of the world, which some may argue because Jesus Christ is given this post.

By the way, Christian fundis often claim that whatever researchers scientists do are wrong, for example the Big Bang Theory or the research if the gay gene exists. Their famous quote was that none of the researches are curing cancer, and are wasting money. Now that we are finding a way to cure cancer, they began to claim that certain parts of this and that is wrong.

What do they want?

When judgement day comes, I will really earnestly look unto Jesus to see if He shakes His head towards His believers.

Christmas is coming too. Maybe He will come back on His birthday. God knows.

My memory's abit hazy, but I think it was mentioned in the Straits Times before sometime back, something of a feather in Phillip Yeo's hat to get them to come to Singapore.

Couldn't be bothered. Sure this will warm up to the Gahmen's vision of a biopolis, but seriously, the only people benefitting this will be the management of research facilities, with all the money coming in from their research results.

The biotechnology industry sounds so MLM to me.

The biotechnology industry sounds so MLM to me.

MLM?!

No wonder you couldn't be bothered. You're just too damn dumb!

Really, I don't give a damn about the perceived governmental coercion here and who gets the credit as long as it's about advancing stem-cell research and the quest for a cancer cure. Well, at least I don't give a damn as long as it's ethical

Was in the ST a few weeks ago. Heard it first in tomorrow.sg? I don't think so.

Cheers.

Oh, it's alright. Nobody reads the ST anyway.

LOL I know I don't ;)

Maybe we use the condemned for clinical trials before we hang them? There would be no ethical problems since they are going to be executed anyway. I mean, that would be truly "Uniquely Singapore!"

I think that you do not understand what a stem cell is.

It's OK if you want to post something intelligent but in this instance your ignorance is embarrassing me.

simi stem sell? i shoot out stem cell every day ah! dun pray pray! yen dao's stem vely big one hor! can slap you until you see star ah!

fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap! fwap!

As an outsider (I am Indonesian living in Indonesia), I envy you folks. You should celebrate that news. Stem cells aside, that news shows that Singapore has a potential. Even top scientists prefer Singapore compared to America. That should say something. Your Life Sciences research (and perhaps business?) will move forward faster than the rest of the world (except South Korea?).

As for the stem cells research, I heard that South Korea is the leader in this area. Maybe because there's too many religious discussions in other parts of world. They move forward. Many people should benefit from the research. (Parkinson anybody?) I have mixed feelings about stem cell research, though.
