Videoclip of the banned 'political film' Singapore Rebel by Martyn See

Google Video said:

Synopsis on Google Video: This is the film Singapore’s censorship board doesn’t want people to see. It’s the story of opposition politician Chee Soon Juan, who has been imprisoned twice for championing democratic change in the city state. The censors declared it a “party political film” and it was pulled from April 2005’s Singapore International Film Festival line-up after the director was warned he could face two years in jail if the screening went ahead. Directed by Martyn See.

Recommended by virgin_undergrad: "If you were to recall, Martyn See made headlines a couple of months ago when he was investigated by the police and allegedly forced to withdraw his short film 'Singapore Rebel' from the Singapore International Film Festival. It wasn't until i googled 'singapore' under the google's video search did i realise that the video was available on the internet.

It is not my intention to use this recommendation as a platform for any policitical discussion, but rather i just felt that it would be interesting for Singaporeans to see for ourselves what exactly what was the controversy about. "

Great film I must say, but what's with all the laughing at the first part?

Hahaha... Oh well...

I have to say, I admire Dr Chee courage and determinations.

Press freedom, press freedom, press freedom.

I'd say all Singaporeans should gain access to the internet. That should solve the problem.

The entire documentary can be downloaded from the Internet Archive at the following link:

the link to martyn see's blog. Apprantly, his equipment and tapes were confiscated and not yet returned.

I am currently researching for my next short film - on an ex-detainee. And I will probably spend a lot of time hanging out with him, like I did with Chee Soon Juan. But the film will ultimately be my vision, not his or anybody else's. Hopefully, all of you will get to see it, legally of course.

Good post! Didn't realize can catch the film on Google video.

Dr Chee is not half the raving lunatic he is as often portrayed by the local press.

But then, reading and believing everything the MSM churns out in SG is a bit like subscribing to a Commie newsletter in North Korea - nothing but good news from our dear leaders. Nope, no oppositions ever, we crush you faster than you can say "Nabei Cheebye!"

yeah.. i second your wrds.. probably he's too big a threat to our govt so they gotta do somethings to him. imagine 10 Dr Chees in the running for the next election. the pap will literally crumble.

Dr Chee alleges that during the famous-moment-caught-on-TV, Mr Goh started pointing to his own pocket when asked "where is the money?"

Now THAT I find interesting, didn't know him to be such a cheeky bas****

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 14 November, 2005 - 1:47am

can't blame Dr Chee for getting incensed if Mr Goh really did point to his pocket. Provocative gesture what. I would be furious too if I was asking serious questions but instead of answers I was disrespected and then disregarded.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 14 November, 2005 - 1:51am

I mean... pointing to his pocket means a million things.

Did he take the money for himself or is it still in Indonesia?

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 14 November, 2005 - 10:08am

a few peanuts definitely is able to fit inside the pocket.

i hope they will soon realise that there is no point banning such films since everyone is watching it on the internet anyway...

hope tomorrow.sg doesn't get into trouble anyway.

or Mr Goh might have been kidding, where is the money? u mean the coins I have in my pocket?

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 14 November, 2005 - 3:34pm

Yeah maybe it's spent, that's why what's left is loose change.

who is to say who is right who is wrong?

"Absolute power corrupts absolutely" - Lord Acton

Each side has their own side of the story. Cant say who's right and who's wrong. I do qns if this video is overly biased too or if they are trying to portray a victimized Chee.

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 15 November, 2005 - 3:34pm

I am not saying Dr. Chee is telling the truth or he is entirely right but at least he should be given the chance to tell his story? Freedom of speech is the No.1 right in U.S.

Can you name me a film on PAP or the government that is not overly biased? Plus we all know the sad truth of state-influence medias in Singapore, unless u have chosen the blue pill for life to carry on as protray by the media.

Politics are dirty games. Never trust a politician.
