Instant Messaging Trends

Kelvin Quee said:

Today (24 August 2005), Google started offering Google Talk Vo-IP (voice over IP) together with its Jabber-based IM (instant messaging) protocol.

(More than) Coincidentally, Skype releases development tools to help developers add IM functionality to Skype on the same day.

The IM market is getting really interesting.

Here’s my recount of the history of IM, from my memory, from a Singaporean perspective.

It all started with ICQ, the grand-daddy of all IMs.

I'm shamelessly plugging myself, but I want to bring to light the recent trends in the Instant Messaging arena, to awake oblivious IM users who think that MSN is the only way to go and that we should all care about standards.

I think in this IM war, Google is going to win. Although the beta version is still rather lacking in features, but I'm sure it's lightweightness brings up it's name.

MSN Messenger takes forever30sec to fully load up and sign in, and Google Talk? 2 seconds is enough.

I have made the switch. You should too.

Trackback from Google Talk and IM:

nice blog on Google talk...

Why not use Miranda (or GAIM, or Adium, or Trillian)? That way you can have ICQ, MSN, and Google Talk all at the same time.

We know, but that means maintaining 3 different accounts for 3 different sets of protocol and 3 different sets of contacts.

One protocol will bring alot of convenience and makes alot of sense.

A client that handles multiple protocol is a workaround to a problem and not the solution.

I see Google Talk as the solution

Trackback from The Malady of Johnny Malkavian:

It had to happen sooner or later. Google now has their own IM client (beta) featuring Gmail and VoIP integration. No ads, no emoticons, no games, no nudges, no winks, no animated avatars (hell, no avatars AT ALL). Just IM and VoIP, neat.

Trackback from mindless ramblings of an ineffectual preacher:

After all the speculation, it turns out to be true: Google is taking on the Instant Messaging market with its new offering: Google Talk. It's not just IM, though. It's also VoIP, which means Skype is now a competitor to Google as well...

did anyone realise the fact that google talk mines your chat logs? all your chat messages are logged and tagged against your google id to serve you ads in other google-based services?

Hi,

They probably do but only to a certain extent. No more adverse than Gmail (yet everyone is still using Gmail).

Here's an extract from the privacy policy(http://www.google.com/talk/privacy.html):

Contents of communications and usage. The Google Talk software stores the most recent lines of your text chats locally on your computer. Google Talk does not archive the contents of your text or voice communications on Google's servers, and we will not archive such contents on our servers without your express permission and clear notification to all our users. We may relay content for users in some cases. Google employees do not access the content of any instant messages, voice transmissions, or files you send or receive, except as described in this policy.
