No, We Cannot Refuse Random Bag Searches In MRT

Heng-Cheong Leong said:

If you want to take the MRT, you'll have to agree to be searched.

MRT passengers never have any rights to refuse random searches, unlike our counterparts in New York City.

this reminds me of the rally anecdote where the country can ban chewing gum and make it stick.

V for Vendetta the comic? i dunno what the remark and the blog have to do with it.. maybe i should finish the book.. anyway, this big brother thing going on in singapore, bout how everything is scrutinised is basically for the safety of our people, if we wanna be like NY, complacent, we have had our CBD area bombed and shit, this are all insentive measures to keep our country safe, Singapore cannot even afford ONE terrorist activity.

shallow voters who choose to vote in a tyrannical regime should not be surprised when their rights are systematically reduced and their interests compromised

What's this fella saying?

Since when did we have a CHOICE on whether to vote? Last I checked it was compulsory.

Who among us CHOSE to be raised in a tyrannical regime?

Who is the one being shallow and simplistic here? Spouting this kind of pseudo-educated dorkism.

A quote from South Park's Eric Cartman: "Respect my Authorethei'!!!"

For those "shallow" people who think that voting alone will change things, let me tell you ithat it won't work in Singapore.

Voting has no effect (shameless plug). What Singapore needs is people who will come out from their shelter zones and become a politician. (Join an opposition party, not PAP)

Wise man he say : If the shit dun flush down the toilet bowl, go to another toilet.

The Singapore dream (all whiny 15 year olds please take note) is to study very hard (7" textbook stack will help) and get a scholarship to go study overseas. Find work there and then skip bail/bond. After a few years, apply for green card.

Voting is not the only way to change things :)

For the rest of us, it is too late. we can only stay here and Kao Peh. But dun come and tok cock and call us shallow hor.

Caveat to middle-eastern looking folks. You still might get shot on the subway or simply rounded up everytime a plane crashes into a building. As long as you not look like Ang Mor, don't expect to enjoy Ang Mor rights and freedom.

I don't think voting alone will change the Singapore politics. I am fine with the way it is. I don't see the need to prove anything. Feel free to not visit my shameless plug.

I was referring to "shallow voters who choose to vote in a tyrannical regime should not be surprised when their rights are systematically reduced and their interests compromised
Posted by visceral on 22 August, 2005 - 1:47pm" when I posted the comment, thus the inverted commas for "shallow". You don't have to get worked up over something that you don't understand.

me thinks visceral should stop making stupid, incomprehensible rhetorical statements and start shutting up, or actually try to contribute if he REALLY REALLY feels the need to.

For once, i actually think that making the bag searches complusory is actually a somewhat sensible thing to do. If hypothetically you do have bombs or illegal items with you, and security wants to search you, all you need to do is just to refuse to let your bag be searched and you can always board the train at another station. This totally defeats the purpose of having any searches in the first place.

So instead of a half-hearted effort in enforcing security, either we don't have any bag checks at all, or the bag checks should be mandatory. The ability to refuse search in NYC just smacks of a half-hearted attempt at detering terrorism, and ultimately acheives no concrete goals. http://txfx.net/2005/08/06/nyclu-protests-voluntary-bag-searches/ argues succinctly why in this case, NYC has got it wrong. Ultimately, i would prefer that there be no bag checks at all, but if it must be implemented, then it must be a firm and consistant policy for it to have any deterrent value.

Look at parts of Philippines, Southern Thailand etc. everyone entering a shopping mall, train station or anyplace that is a likely terrorist target has to comply with the bag searches. I've been in some of these places and seen how people don't complain much. I think once your are victim of a terrorist act you are are more willing and you comply.

to anon: I respect your freedom to voice your disdain, and I respect someone who is capable of voicing it. I wont shut up though, for precisely the same reasons

"I think once your [sic] are victim of a terrorist act you are more willing and you comply." Not in New York City.
