NKF vs SPH

With the news that NKF's CEO is making 600k a year and 12 months bonus, Singapore bloggers rise up immediately to this call-for-action.

Please trackback your thoughts on this entry.

[shianux: While there are some good comments, I've come to the conclusion that the vast majority of comments have nothing constructive to say, and are only interested in making ugly personal attacks.]
[shianux: Yup yup, keep it going, once again Singaporeans have proven themselves mindless sheep, piling on to whoever is a convenient scapegoat.]

i was left wondering why i did not and others did not question NKF before. we had too much trust or that we did not exercise critical thinking? some fault does lie with the community..

Accept it with a big heart. People have their choice and chance of making money. U cannot see peanut, work harder. Not just with hands and brain. Need not be in science and engineering, sometime paper shuffling and talking can make more. It is not just hard work or love your people like your own son, but correct timing, organisation, talent, networking, right friends, group and power base. Don't be disheartened, work for it! Human life change forms after million years, society has changing values. Make sacrifices and u too can see peanut with just $600,000 and $30K monthly credit card bill.

how many people were there in the former board of directors???
how many people were there in the former executive committee???
why were only four of them named???
what kind of fee do you get to be a director on the board???

if a person is getting paid to be on the board and through
his or her inaction
the rest of the board members screwed up
is this person guilty or innocent???

If you are a ceo with 260million reserve....
what do you do?

Open a factory to manufacture the dialysis machine and maintainance of the machine, as the same time create jobs for the patient.

Acting Health Minister supports NKF over publicity surrounding its reserves
Channel News Asia
10 April 2004

Acting Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan has come out in support of the National Kidney Foundation in the wake of recent publicity surrounding its reserves.

Mr Khaw, a regular donor to the NKF himself, says it would be a sad day in Singapore if, as a result, there was a donation backlash, and this affected patients.

In recent days, there has been much publicity on the NKF and the amount of reserves it has.

But the Minister said the NKF has been innovative in its fund-raising and that is why it has been able to encourage a lot of regular donors, like himself.

And donations must be continuous.

Mr Khaw said: "It is a continuous process. It is a large operation now. I don't know how much they spend but with a thousand over dialysis patients on continuous dialysis, the demand is big and you can never be sure when the donation will dry up. I hope the publicity will lead in the correct direction - that is to cause more awareness of the problem of dialysis, of people with kidney failure, and by all means donate. I continue to donate."

The Minister, who has made transparency his trademark since he took over the health portfolio, urged the NKF to continue to remain transparent about the donations.

And he said while donors want 100 percent of donations to go to the beneficiary, that was not possible as some money needs to go to pay for further fund-raising.

Charities must also abide by the rules of fund-raising.

He said: “I'm sure the Commissioner if Charities has certain rules and code of conduct and if they are not fulfilling it, then the MOF will react but in this case, I don't think so. Otherwise, they have been around for many years, MOF would have reacted many years ago.”

Mr Khaw added that donating to charities should be encouraged.

“It's good for Singaporeans to promote, be encouraged to give to charity. It's good for you. I take my hat off to the NKF. They have been able to raise that kind of money over the years and we wish them well.”

Why must Singaporean left Singapore for Greener Pasture ?

In Singapore, most people are forced to live in Highly Dangerous
Buildings
(HDB),

And most people have already got used to Paying and Paying (PAP).

Not only do you have to pay, you Pay Until Bankrupt (PUB).

If that's not enough, somebody still Purposely Wants to Dig (PWD) and
get
more from you.

So what more can you do when you are in the Money Only Environment
(MOE)?

With the current Mad Accounting System (MAS), you are forced to Pay the
Sum
Ahead (PSA),

Which will leave some people Permanently Owing Some Banks (POSB).

And forced to live on the Loan Techniques Always (LTA) system.

When you fall sick and happen to be admitted to a Money Operating
Hospital(MOH),

You might be able to use your Cash Prior to Funeral (CPF) fund.

If you are out of luck, you may meet doctors who Never Use Heart (NUH)
to
treat you,

And you will be Sure to Give up Hope (SGH).

To help ease the traffic, motorists have to pay Cash On Expressway
(COE).

If that doesn't help, they can always Eternally Raise Prices (ERP) on
the
roads.

If you don't own a car, you can always make a Mad Rush to the Train
(MRT),

OR get squashed in a bus Side By Side (SBS).

Lastly, under all these pressures, there are not many places we can
relax,

Not even the good old place we used to go because it has become

So Expensive and Nothing TO See Actually (SENTOSA)!!!

But what to do...S'pore run like NKF leh

how sure are we that they WILL NOT get months of bonus this year?

Here are some facts about NKFs (this can also be used as a way to relieve your pent up anger)...

Here's an excerpt from Susan Long's article in the Straits Times that bought about the recent lawsuit from the NKF against SPH.

"The NKF: Controversially ahead of its time?
by Susan Long

A RETIRED contractor who wants to be known only as Mr Tan used to be a National Kidney Foundation (NKF) donor until he was hired to install some bathroom fittings for its new headquarters at Kim Keat Road in 1995.

Inside chief executive T.T. Durai's office suite on the 12th floor of the $21
million building, he says he 'lost it' when he had to install, among other
things, a glass-panelled shower, a pricey German toilet bowl and a gold-plated tap."

Susan Long's story is factually incorrect because it claims that the gold-plated tap was installed in the ensuite bathroom of TT Durai's office at the 12th floor of its S$21 million dollar building in 1995. This is not possible because they only moved into their new building in May 1999, not in 1995, as stated in the Straits Times article. How do you explain that?

TT Durai's daugther sent a letter to PM Lee to ask that her father's reputation be restored if he is cleared. Can you imagine: TT Durai still thinks he has done nothing wrong! this is ourtrageous!

As Durai's daughter, please dont get into the picture. The investigations may not work kindly on your side.

A letter mentioned in parliment have its reasons.
Looked like the some war pychologists are at work to see if that could help to cool thing down.

Yes... he did devised a way to get fund for the patients.
Yes... he has the connections and the vision to draw sympathies..
Yes... in his conquest, he have assist many big corporations to sustain profit despite the down turn.

But we cannot denied..

he cheated all the donors...
he does not have the heart to help the needies...
he is guilty from the start ... making donation as pure income...
investing only if it help to promotes more dontation.
There is no charity heart in him..

Pychologists wont work here... the facts are bloody truths. it is not a painted vision. where we can imagine good from bad.. where we find small reason to doubt....
everything is real.. the pain and injuries are already done.

Anybody ever wonder that the so call health screening tests by NKF are not really free???Usually the companies that invite them have to give token "donations"which are in the thousands and when we finished our test we still being are to donate??? normally thinking that the tests are free or shy ,we usually donate quite generously, right? How do they consider these donations?Furthermore, many of these people who carry the test are mostly volunteers!!!

this is to light of hope:-

Excuse me, you're saying the nurse and staff are wonderfull, meaning what - the other care centres and hospitals staff and nurses are lower standard than this NKF?

And there are so many people out there done wonderfull things without mentioning their names or showing off. These are the ones you can call true heroes!

And you said keep contributing - what for??????

Yesterday "Detik" a malay prog - showing a malay woman saying desperately that she is paying $500/mth for dialysis?? I dont think this is fair or any justice done with our donation. Even if she is paying $250/mth is also alot! $200OVER MILLION INTEREST EARN can cover anything & EVERYTHING for yrs to come- ! THAT POOR MALAY WOMAN - asking for continue donation as it if NKF has ZERO!

I have been loving and caring for alot of people who suffers in silence with illness and I contributed to NKF too. I am also prone to any kind of sickness and anyboby in my family can fall ill can maybe one day need dialysis too - but watching, reading and hearing - of how NKF and that GUY used and waste our money - I hv stopped.
I rather go house to house or call those people needed help and pass my money to them directly - at least I got peace of mind -

You can go ahead and donate.

A lot has been said about putting the patient first. One way of ensuring this would be to put some qualified patient on the board after all, they are the primary stakeholders in all this. The other being the doners. Perhaps a major contributor (either private citizen or corporation) as the other major stakeholder be given a place on the board as well.

For greater benefit to the patients, job openings at the NKF should first be offered to qualified patients before looking for outside sources.

A lot has also been said about paying competitive salaries. I don't think anybody working in a charity should be paid a 'competitive' salary. That's not what you are there for. Why ? Consider the following for thought:

A man does not join the priesthood for the free food and housing or easy access to young choir boys.
A priest who encourages his flock to go out and multiply does not earn the right to do some 'multiplying' of his own.
An abbott does not have the right to wear fur-lined robes while his novices are shivering in their cotton ones. (That's why the communist system failed...in China at least.)

If you have outgrown your charitable sentiments, do the right thing and leave for the private sector.

The NKF is a trustee of the funds donated by the public for the benefit of the patients. The management's role is not to be miserly when it comes to patient subsidies and profligate when it comes to their own salaries and perks.

The new board has appointed KPMG to check the accounts. These people charge 'peanuts' for their services. Who is footing the bill ? We jail crank callers who make hoax bomb calls because of the cost to make sure it is not a real threat. CEO's and their boards that cause problems like these that necessitate the use of such expensive checks should be made to foot the bill. This is a good way to ensure good corporate governance.

Can someone set up a petition to award a Public Service medal (Gold at least!) to the public spirited plumber who started all this ? If not for this coming National Day, at least the next one!

A side effect of this is may be that more well-to-do (through questionable means) people will start doing their own chores....image their maid, drivers or gardeners etc... 'losing it' as well :)

On a lighter vein, (this is a self plug), take a look at the Peanut Index

buddhist monk receiving SGD 15k per month, how he uses it ? buy jeans. Rolex, eats sharksfin, go karaoke ?

nkf is a big outfit, by any standard, it has outsource many services to contractors, who own those contractors, who benefitted ?new auditor need to search thoroughly.

new medals for this national day award, peanut medal, golden tap medal, kidney medal..

germantoiletbowl medal ?

I got another shock last night watching the malay prog "DETIK" one the the patient a malay woman - is paying $500/mth for the dialysis. Is this is what NKC called CHARITY?
I think they even making more money by saving part of the donations for their own luxuries. THIS IS VERY INJUSTICE. GOVERNMENT AND THE NEW BOARD SHLD MODIFY ALL.

Posted by Anonymous -MALAY* on 21 July, 2005 - 10:26am

nkf has reserve of 300 million ?
interest , 5% per year? 15 million , more than 1 million per month , can count like this or not ar ?

Wah, if interest is 3% a year, 9 million already can finance 7 million dialysis per year until when har?? until forever man!

Posted by Anonymous Coward* on 25 July, 2005 - 6:32pm

If you based on layman investment, just put as fixed deposit on high foreign current account for half the value. And the rest in government bond... you should get close or more this value.

but if ou take a quarter for higher risk investment, and the rest as deposit, then can get 10 percent return a year. Most fund climbs by 10 percent, even the most obstinate one.
are giving more than 10 percent return.

some private centers in malaysia charging only 100 ringgit, according to some sources.

...this interesting paper which explores the demand side of charity. The paper makes two main empirical findings:...

I only have a couple of questions. It will be good if someone can have it answered:

1) How was my donation being handled in the last 13 years. Since 1992 when Mr. TT has been with NKF?
2) How much are we paying the outsource call center that Mr. TT has a share in? Is he getting any director's fee and how much?
3) How did the board derive a 12 months bonus for Mr TT. Does he has a performance measurement based on the amount of donation he can get per year?
4) All the gifts and prize that NKF got for the charity shows, are they contributed legally?
5) Are the authories doing a investigation on any wrong doings IF ANY?

Well, I believe this is on the head of most people in Singapore. But nevertheless, I truely believe that NKF has been doing a great job for the last 32 years. That I must acknowledged. I will continue to donate bcos i know that there are thousands of people out there that truely need it to keep them alive. Let's not allow one person's doing to affect our spirit of caring and giving for our fellow countryman. Let's show Mr. TT that our contribution can double or even triple even if he is not in NKF.

Posted by Markie* on 19 July, 2005 - 5:09pm

new board has been formed, direct your questions to them

Durai could not have acted alone.Getting peanuts and sitting on huge reserves.Turning
away some patients.Misleading the general public on the number of patients it`s treating and how long it will run out of funds.Besides peanuts he`s getting,he got 8 cars at his personal disposal and not to mention travelling first class.
I`m now wondering, how much peanuts, personal cars and privilages are the board of directors getting too?Why are the executive/management staffs in NKF still supporting
Mr Peanut? Are they too getting peanuts and 12 months bonus?

new auditors appointed, hope something good will turn out.

Auditor cannot be around all the time... they just check on figure...
Dont depend so much on them... afterall the board are their pay master.

It is better to get a MP sit in the board so that he can be questioned in parliment..

got a Mp from drew and napier, sin boon an or ong kian min, who raised question in parliament on NKF, a few yaers back..

before forgiveness, there must be an apology. to belittle and despise the people's hard earned money, which they gave generously despite the economic downturns, and to term it 'peanuts'....UNWISE!!

i'll rather be giving the money to the poor directly than 'trusting' it to any third party. God will be the best judge in all matters!

I am wondering. Only about $7 millions were given to the suffering patients. With an operation of 900 strong staff. If based on ONLY $1000 per month per staff, excluding cpf contribution, allowances and BONUSES. The labour cost would be $1000 x 12 months x 900 staff = $10.8 millions. HOW TO JUSTIFY??????????????? HOPELESS..........
