Bad television fairy tales

»

ms beautifuk rants about the fantasies and unrealistic expectations created by TV:

In all advertisements, deliverymen are young, fit and pleasant-looking. [...] How sweet it all looks.

Imagine the poor old spinster who wants a little thrill in her mundane little life.

So she decides to mail herself a parcel through Fed-Ex or DHL or whatever, hoping to meet one of the nice, young men in the ads. Then what happens? A wrinkled, overweight man turns up at her doorstep. Not quite the knight she envisioned eh?

She even explains why some girls are still single! Nicely written.

Frankly, this had the tone of one of those people who sit around muttering about "kids these days". The moment she talked about "erosion of values" as though it were a given thing, it was an instant switch-off.

Thanks , tinkertailor

ssf...I'm 18 years old, so I guess I'm very well one of those "kids of today" that I'm muttering about too, eh? Funny.

Boy, youth really IS wasted on the young. :)

Seriously, for some reason people throughout history have always thought that the morals of the young are on the decline - a Plato quote (supposedly) goes:

"What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?"

It's entertainment. That's how the media runs. Would you rather watch old ugly people starring on tv? The next thing you know, you'll have people complaining about Miss Singapore Universe... oh wait, they are already doing that...

So much for reality.

People don't want reality.

Unrealistic expectations? TV creates no such thing. Only people can create expectations. Only an idiot would expect to have their packages delivered by gorgeous happy men. Normal people aren't that dumb.

When I see a perfect gorgeous hamburger, I know it's going to look a lot different if I go to the restaurant and get one. I don't actually expect it to look in real life the way I see it on TV.
